Last time I checked New Zealand was still an English speaking country

Sunlive has reported the latest outrage which is a supermarket having the temerity to expect its workers to speak English while at work. I don’t know about you but I hate staff members speaking in front of me in a non-English language. What do they have to hide? It is incredibly rude especially when they laugh and glance at you occasionally when talking to each other or when they look upset or angry.

A post on social media has sparked outrage after it said “only English language is to be spoken” by staff in a Bay of Plenty supermarket.

Posted on a Papamoa social media group, the picture shows a notice board sign that has been put up by the supermarket’s management.

The sign says that only the English language is to be spoken in the supermarket, including the staffroom, shop floor and storeroom.

In order to assimilate successfully into New Zealand immigrants need to learn to speak English. If they stick to their native language while at work they will not improve their English and they will upset customers who will worry about what they are saying behind their back. Work is the BEST place for a new immigrant to polish their English language skills. It makes sense to make it an English only zone to encourage them to become competent English speakers.

SunLive contacted Foodstuff NZ and in a statement they said the sign wasn’t intended to be culturally offensive, instead it was meant to help form better communication between staff.

What could possibly be culturally offensive about a requirement to speak the majority language of New Zealand? It seems that being a White male is bad but now even a desire to promote the English language ( a white man’s language) is somehow bad too? Why is it that anything about our culture is considered offensive these days?

“Like many organisations we now have a huge diversity and cultural mix in our stores. Sometimes this can lead to communication issues,” says North Island general manager Doug Cochrane.

“A sign was put up in an attempt to ask staff to communicate in a common language that everyone understands.

“Unfortunately the wording on the sign did not convey the true intention or sentiment and was removed immediately.

“The store team is working through better ways to deal with these sorts of issues.”

They will have to resort to techniques being used all over the western world now that everything about our culture is under attack. They will be forced underground and will have to ensure that nothing is ever put in writing. Bottom line is that the employees will speak English if they want a future with the company but no one and I mean no one will ever say anything more about it.
