BDS now bullying Israeli singer coming to WOMAD

Emboldened by their success in bullying li’l Ella Yelich-O’Connor aka Lorde, the BDS movement is now going after Israeli singers wanting to play in NZ.

A Palestinian advocacy group is calling for the withdrawal of an Israeli singer from the WOMAD lineup.

Victoria Hanna is scheduled to perform at the New Plymouth festival in March.

But the Palestine Solidarity Network says her attendance would breach the international boycott movement known as BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions).

Hanna’s visit is “part of a propaganda tour for the Israeli state”, the group said on Sunday.

“Just as most New Zealanders stood with black South Africans in the fight against apartheid in South Africa, we must also stand in solidarity with the Palestinian victims of Israeli apartheid.”

The call comes after Kiwi pop star Lorde cancelled plans to perform in Israel in solidarity with Palestinian rights campaigners.

I wonder of those same protestors would seek to ban Achinoam Nini if she said she was coming to NZ. She’s Israeli too. I’ve even interviewed her.

I’d bet they’d welcome her with open arms…because hers is a pro-Palestinian message they agree with, not where she is from. That would show up their hypocrisy in a heartbeat.

However, there is a wrinkle, it is also well known that she is utterly opposed BDS, despite her support for Palestinians.

She’s Achinoam Nini — many know her professionally as Noa. The pride of Israel, yes?

But not to a few vociferous, ill-informed critics in Vancouver, who pressured the Jewish National Fund of Canada to withdraw its support for a Nini concert planned for Israeli Independence Day in May.

Supposedly, these critics were outraged over a Jerusalem Post report alleging that Nini supports the movement to boycott, divest from and sanction Israel. But that report was so erroneous that the Post actually deleted the story from its website and apologized for it. Nini has never supported BDS, a position she reiterated in a Facebook post in which she wrote: “I not only condemn the BDS. I myself am a victim of its hypocritical and harmful activity!”

When I was interviewing her I came away with the impression she was hard left in her outlook, and as aggressive as she was arrogant. She may well support the Palestinian cause, but she sure as hell doesn’t support BDS.
