An own goal for feminism AND the mainstream media

The cultural-left elite hate Professor Jordan Peterson. They have become utterly used to using the academy and the media as their bully-pulpit that. Like Milo, Jordan Peterson is a heretic who dares challenge their hegemony. When Cathy Newman spectacularly failed to ambush Peterson, in an interview on Britain’s Channel 4, she only succeeded in kicking a humiliating own goal for both contemporary feminism and the mainstream media.

Feminism’s feet of clay bared on British TV

British journalist Douglas Murray said he’d never seen a television interview more catastrophic for the interviewer. Others are naming TV journalist Cathy Newman’s grilling of Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson as a pivotal moment exposing modern feminism’s clay feet.

Journalism students for years to come should have to watch this farce. This was a textbook example of how not to do an interview. Newman was hostile from the opening questions, and repeatedly tried to ambush Peterson with ridiculous straw-man questions. Her attempts to shovel words in Peterson’s mouth were so blatant that a compilation of every time Newman said, “So, what you’re saying is …” has been uploaded to YouTube.

the major gotcha moment in the interview was all about freedom of speech … Newman asked Peterson, “Why should your right to freedom of speech trump a trans person’s right not to be offended?”

The good professor responded: “Because in order to be able to think, you have to risk being offensive. I mean, look at the conversation we’re having right now .. You’re doing what you should do, which is digging a bit to see what the hell is going on…But you’re exercising your freedom of speech to certainly risk offending me, and that’s fine. More power to you, as far as I’m concerned.”

His answer left Newman totally floundering.

Leftists hate free speech, because in a free exchange of ideas, leftist dogmas don’t go unchallenged. So, the left have been mounting increasingly brazen attacks on the very notion of free speech. One of the battlegrounds of the free speech wars has been “gender”. The left try to pathologise all disagreements as “phobias”. Peterson is having none of this nonsense.

But it was on the classic feminist issues that Newman was exposed as a vapid ideologue incapable of defending her cherished beliefs. Peterson’s rational, fact-based responses to questions about women’s achievements in the workplace went totally over her head. Newman responded to evidence with anecdotes, claimed he’d made statements he hadn’t … incessantly straw-manning, niggling, attacking and wilfully refusing to listen to Peterson’s responses.

Newman’s shrill, irrational hectoring has exposed feminism and the modern left, and their ideological stormtroopers, the mainstream media, as clueless thugs, trying to stamp out any contrary opinions.

Many, like British sociologist Nicholas A Christakis, found themselves in awe of Peterson’s cheerful, reasoned responses … “Facts and reason are powerful allies,” he tweeted.

But unfamiliar territory for feminists who are rarely confronted with this type of evidence, particularly in public …. [Peterson] managed to refute the ideological claptrap which holds sway throughout much of the mainstream media … the anointed liberal elite which controls the media knows it doesn’t represent popular opinion but “works tirelessly to make damn sure no one’s allowed anywhere near the media bubble to propose a learned valid legitimate opinion.”

Jordan Peterson has rapidly emerged from academic obscurity, to become an important voice of reasoned intellectualism who has galvanised millions. Peterson combines the fierce instinct for classical liberalism of a Hitchens, cushioned by the sober intellectualism of a Roger Scruton.

Journalist Tim Lott … concludes the man is “one of the most important thinkers to emerge on the world stage for many years.” As Newman discovered to her peril.

James Delingpole is predicting that this marks a pivotal victory in the Culture Wars. Here’s hoping.

Who is Lushington D. Brady?

Well, a pseudonym. Obviously.

But the name Lushington Dalrymple Brady has been chosen carefully. Not only for the sum of its overall mien of seedy gentility, reminiscent perhaps of a slightly disreputable gentlemen of letters, but also for its parts, each of which borrows from the name of a Vandemonian of more-or-less fame (or notoriety) who represents some admirable quality which will hopefully animate the persona of Lushington D. Brady.
