Guy Williams has the right to crack bad jokes about religion even if they are not funny

Guy Williams initially said that making fun of religions is funny and he didn’t understand what all the fuss is about. When he experienced some push back instead of doubling down he soon caved and apologised for being a comedian.

So what was it that he said exactly?

He swore at the idea of a “Christian song” but thinks it would be hilarious to have a Muslim song.

It is not the first time he has had a crack at Christianity.

Comedy will disappear if we get too precious about jokes even if they are bad jokes and not at all funny. The whole point of comedy is to mock ideas and people. if there is some truth in it it is usually funny. That is how comedy works. I support free speech and no one should be exempt from comedy’s reach.

I think that Guy Williams’ should try his hand now at having a crack at Islam and Muhammad instead of limiting himself to mocking just Jesus and Christians and then report back to us just how much peace and tolerance he receives in response to his jokes. I am sure that the death threats, religious fatwas and complaints to Dame Susan Devoy will make a few upset comments on Twitter look like child’ play.

Comedians have made fun of religion for generations but they all are too scared to mock the religion of peace. Islam is just made for comedy. It has to be one of the most mirth-making religions out there. It is the only religion that calls itself the religion of peace when all evidence points to it being the exact opposite. It deserves ridicule and we should poke fun at it just like we poke fun at everything else. Comedy is only funny when there is an element of truth in it after all and the truth is that if you make a joke about Islam you just might die laughing.
