Is Brooke Loader after Louisa Wall’s seat?

The Manurewa Local Board by-election represents the first loss for Labour since the 23 September 2017 general election. Dave Pizzini won by a 14 percent margin.

Pizzini has publicly credited Manurewa-Papakura Ward Councillor and Auckland’s most formidable political fixer Cr Daniel “Vlad” Newman for running his campaign. At a time when Labour won by-elections in Maungakiekie-Tamaki and Waitemata, the Manurewa result is a significant loss, noting the size of Pizzini’s margin.

Labour candidate Brooke Loader made two mistakes. Firstly, she lost in what ought to be a heartland Labour stronghold. Secondly, prior to the by-election, she has purportedly been indiscreet in discussing her Labour parliamentary aspirations. Many people view her as wanting to win a local board seat in Manurewa as a forerunner to challenging incumbent Louisa Wall for her parliamentary nomination.

Wall was notably absent from Loader’s losing campaign and correctly judged that Loader would get destroyed by Pizzini. Rather than prop up a failing campaign, Wall watched Loader be decimated by a Vlad Newman-orchestrated effort that saw Labour outplayed in its South Auckland stronghold.

Having watched Loader have her head put on a metaphorical pike, Wall now has all the ammunition necessary to condemn her would-be challenger as unelectable, ungrateful and unworthy of a future endorsement.

Loader is heavily reliant on her new beau, Shane Henderson, the Labour chairperson of the Henderson-Massey Local Board. Up until 48 hours before the close of polling, Henderson was publicly declaring that the result was too close to call. Henderson too may have parliamentary aspirations but is firmly entrenched in West Auckland. If Loader sticks with Henderson she will continue to be West Auckland-based and far removed from Manurewa.

Having been distracted by a by-election in his own ward, Newman is purportedly in negotiations with actual right-wing council candidates in Franklin and Whau, and has been fielding calls from the North Shore, which is represented by communists, largely due to the inept National MP Maggie Barry who has done nothing to stop a very red take over of one of the bluest areas in the country.
