To become a party leader, you need a story. Without a story – and it better be a good story – two things are bound to happen. One: someone will attach a story to you (and there’s no guarantee it will be helpful). Second: you will not be able to offer your caucus colleagues, the party’s members, or supporters, a convincing reason to vote for you . . .
