LabTested does Valentine’s Day in style

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. Today I would like to pay tribute to a Whaleoil regular who knows how to do Valentine’s Day in style. I am talking, of course, about

The man,

The legend,

The one and only… LabTested.

Just look at what his special lady got…

Well it’s Valentines Day this week and being the hopeless romantic I am, I decided to treat my Princess like a Princess and take her to spend the weekend at an actual fairy tale palace with full spa treatment thrown in.

I must warn that the Fairy Tale Magic Princess Dust is guaranteed to dissipate within 36-48 hours, OR as soon as the princess gets in the car for the trip home and starts arguing with the sat nav. She has the worst sense of direction of anyone I have ever met, but that does not stop her.

… and before anyone mentions the cost. The room was surprisingly cheap. My bar bill came to more than the cost of the room (did you know that princesses can drink like a fish?)

The room cost less than you would pay for a standard motel room in NZ. Because… these palaces are done up to target the wedding market, and it is not wedding season atm. Sub zero outside, the bride and bridesmaids can not frolic around the grounds. So being totally off season, you can pick up some amazing last minute
offers. – I said I was hopelessly Romantic, not stupid.

The palace we stayed at has a long and complicated history. It is called a castle, because way back in medieval times, some knight had a castle here. You can still see the foundations in the basement

Over the centuries successive owners built a palace on top of the castle ruins. It changed hands many, many times. One of the most controversial was when one lord left the palace (in his will) to his mistress, rather than his children. The tour guide told us that this was such a huge scandal that it made headlines around the world – including the Bay of Plenty Times in NZ!!

Wood carving of the ‘Lady’ who slept her way to the ownership of a palace. She must have been quite ‘talented’.

On a final note: I did post a photo of a piano concert at the palace a couple of days back. In this I jokingly suggested that I was the white-haired old bloke in the suit and tie. Some of you appear to have believed me. Seriously! I thought you knew me better than that. I have not worn a suit in over 10 years and my old ties only come out when the princess wants to play restraining games. Here is an actual photo of me, in the palace, watching the piano thingy, with my boot on the princess’s lap.
