The left respond to National’s new leader

National leader Simon Bridges

You can tell a lot from how the Left respond to National politicians. In the lead up to the caucus decision on who would be selected as National’s new leader, it was clear that they really didn’t want Judith Collins to be chosen. Their focus on her and their praise of the weaker candidates told me all I needed to know. She was the one that they saw as the biggest threat to Jacinda Ardern so they didn’t want her selected.

The cartoonists saw her as the strongest too.

Well, the left will be happy that National didn’t listen to what the majority of National voters wanted and instead found a young, ‘generational change’, ‘diverse’ candidate to ape rock-star Jacinda. I’d start calling him Mr 35% right now but, to be fair, I should probably wait a few months for the mistake the National party have made to have time to truly sink in.

So, what are the left saying about Simon Bridges, who is already playing the race card by drawing attention to his Maori ethnicity?

The Standard:

The new leader of the National Party has been announced. It is Simon Bridges with Paula Bennett remaining as deputy.

Best of British to them. The next poll will be interesting.

Here is a selection of comments from their readers. None of them seem at all worried.

What a laughable combination – two upper North Island MPs – both of the same ethnicity. Where’s the balance? Bennett must be very lucky to survive. Perhaps nobody wanted the job! No chance against Jacinda – not a jot.

Yes, both have Maori ancestors, probably not such a bad thing given the Labour hold on the Maori seats.

Just because they are Maori David Mac doesn’t mean our people will vote for them in fact many of our people can’t stand the sight of either of them and their bullshit polices have been booting our people in the guts so why would we consider these two mongrels

Yes, I think that’s more a political point of view rather than the ethnicity of the leaders. Their selection throws water on the ‘Another generation of European colonisers that know what’s best for us’ outlook.

Will their selection see Iwi voting for National in their droves? Of course not.

Heh. Be interesting to see how far their support falls.

The Daily Blog:

When National decide Leadership they release white smoke from Parliamentary chimney, slaughter a thousand virgins and steal some Maori land.

Here are a couple of comments from their readers. They don’t seem to think that Bridges will be around for long and see his selection as being a ploy to get the Maori vote.

It won’t be long before they will be voting for another leader (a poll or two) then we can start mocking them just like they did to the Labs nothing like a bit of tit for tat aye Martyn

Obviously making a play for the Maori Vote, and both have West Auckland roots.
