School uniform too expensive?

Whine, whine, whine!  Each start of the school year brings parent’s complaints about the cost of kitting out little Johnny Simpleton in his new school uniform.

It’s a rip-off, they say. When will they realize they get what they pay for? Schools choose uniforms that are fit for purpose, comfortable, durable and yes, value for money. You will pay more for something that doesn’t fall apart in the wash or on the child, shrink or stretch.

Familiar with buying throwaway clothing at giveaway prices, parents have forgotten it’s not best quality merchandise at the Warehouse or K-Mart, which seems to be their benchmark for defining reasonable cost. Some of us believe spending more to get something that looks better and lasts much longer is a better option.

Johnny is getting his education virtually for free. Yeah, yeah, I know books and school trips cost a few hundred dollars, but those are the only extra costs they have to worry about. And it’s not as if little Johnny fell out of the sky five minutes ago, his parents have had five years to budget.

What’s wrong with buying a second-hand uniform?  This option is only available because that expensive uniform they’re complaining about is built to last.

If they really are on the bones of their bum, the nice lady in the school office will arrange a brand new uniform for free.  She’s used to handing out free kit to kids who immediately shove their latest model iPhone in the pocket along with their daily lunch money.
