Things that make you go hmmmmm

Maori Television purchased WWE

Believe it or not, Maori Television which is funded to ‘promote Māori language and culture’ with a service ‘that informs, educates, and entertains a broad viewing audience, and, in doing so, enriches New Zealand’s society, culture, and heritage’ has used some of its funding to broadcast the WWE on free to air TV.

I don’t know about you but that doesn’t look particularly culturally enriching to me.

Call us killjoys, but we don’t think taxpayer funding for episodes Smackdown and Raw will enrich New Zealand’s culture.

We put out a media statement saying so. The response was interesting: The Spinoff labelled us “notorious dweebs” and “non-Māori”, and the taxpayer-funded news website The Wireless reported that critics of Māori TV might just be racist.

I really don’t understand why some media accuse people or organisations who hold other people or organisations to account racist. Maori T.V are supposed to advance Maori culture. Since when has American style wrestling been Maori culture? This brings to mind the Iwis who received massive treaty settlement payouts that they invested into fishing vessels in order to provide jobs for their unemployed Maori youth. Instead of training their young people and giving them jobs onboard all the fishing vessels they instead hired and under paid foreigners because they made more of a profit that way. I suppose by pointing out that sad fact I am being racist?

Mike Hosking backed us up: “Where are the people who are handing our money out? Where are they and why aren’t they demanding a few answers, as to why we have a channel delving into a programming world well outside their remit? Using other people’s dough. Or is it all a bit sensitive these days to even be crass enough to ask the question at all?”
