An open letter to Labour MPs

Dear Labour MPs

Soon you will be voting on the legislation which is aimed at closing Charter Schools.  I would very strongly urge you to vote *against* this legislation: one of the most abysmal, cold-hearted and ruthless bills to have ever come before the New Zealand Parliament.

Your choices have never been clearer.

By voting *against* this legislation, you will be voting FOR children – Maori and Pasifika children in particular.

Isn’t THAT what you want to be remembered for?

By voting *against* this legislation, you will be PROVING that Labour does not just say “warm fuzzy” stuff about these children – it takes action to put these children *FIRST*.
Isn’t THAT what you want to be remembered for?

Children FIRST – before foolish laws.  Before foolish ideology. Before the ruthless union-first-children-last wishes of the teacher unions.

You will be voting FOR Chris Hipkins’ statement in Parliament in which he said that “one size does not fit all” when it comes to education.

On the other hand – if you vote to *support* this law, you will be no different to the Taliban in Afghanistan, who blew up the Bamiyan Buddhas because they “didn’t fit their ideology”.

Is *that* what you want to be remembered for?

You will be voting for “the system” first and children LAST.

You will be cold-heartedly dumping the charter school children back into state schools; the very SAME schools that failed these children in the first place.

Is THAT what you want to be remembered for?

You will FOREVER *condemn* Labour to be known as the party that *doesn’t give a damn about Maori and Pasifika children*.

This law will be *thrown in your faces* whenever you profess to “care” about these children.

Is all of THAT what you want to be remembered for?

I *urge* you to *stand up for children* and to vote against this law.  You have *MUCH more power* than you realise.

If anyone tries to threaten you, you can threaten them back with the “nuclear option” –  a “no confidence vote” to dissolve this government (and I can think of no better fate for this *abysmal* bill).

It will only take about *four* of you to defeat this bill and *forever* allow Maori and Pasifika children to access the very *best* education that this country can offer!

Please – for the sake of Maori and Pasifika children – vote *against* this bill.
