Researchers from Oxford’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit analyzed the traditional and social media response to the hunting incident. They found that a combination of elements in the story may have made it go viral in a different way than the average internet sensation. And conservationists may subsequently have a golden opportunity to transform the “Cecil moment” into a “Cecil movement”.
To recap the sequence of events around Cecil’s death: Around 10pm on 1 July 2015, a hunter from Minnesota named Walter Palmer sent an arrow into the side of a 13-year-old male African lion nicknamed ‘Cecil’ on privately owned property outside of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park.[…]
When the story of Tim the tuna’s death at the hands of a New Zealand publicity seeker hit the media, the global response was “oh, can we have a baby picture when the time comes?” according to a newspaper. To recap the sequence of events around Tim’s death: Around 2pm on 8 March 2018, a self-promoting TV host from Auckland named Gayford Clark killed a 40kg Yellowfin Tuna nicknamed ‘Tim’ on a trip to Rarotonga paid for by the NZ taxpayer.

In solidarity with the those in the world’s most despised demographic, WH has decided to ‘come out’ as an old white male. WH enjoys exercising the white-male privilege that Whaleoil provides for him by writing the occasional post challenging climate change consensus; looking at random tech issues that tweak his interest, as a bit of a tech nerd; or generally poking the borax at anyone in public life who goes on record revealing their stupidity. WH never excelled on the sports field because his coaches never allowed him to play in his preferred position on the right-wing. WH also enjoys his MG.
