Pakeha or NZ European?

Puha and Pakeha

There is an article asking whether or not the term Pakeha should be included on the census for people to tick instead of NZ European. No one can agree on what Pakeha actually means and even if they could, regardless of what its original meaning was, it now is considered by many to be a derogatory term.

Just as the word ‘gay’ has changed its meaning due to common usage many people including my father and myself do not like being referred to as  Pakeha. According to my Australian Dad, Pakeha meant unwelcome guest but that is not the only definition of Pakeha that I have heard.

Some people have embraced the term as part of their cultural identity.

Clearly, it all depends on which definition they choose to believe.

Regardless of what academics and Maori say Pakeha means, the fact remains that a good percentage of the non-Maori population do not like to be referred to as Pakeha.
How do you feel about the term? Should it be included in the next census?
