Face of the day

Penny Bright

Veteran Auckland protester Penny Bright’s home will be sold from under her to recover unpaid rates and penalties.

The High Court confirmed to Auckland Council the property will be sold by tender on April 24.

The sale of the property was a last resort, Auckland Council spokesman Matthew Walker said. Bright stopped paying her rates in 2007.

She has made her point. Now would be a good time to pay her rates and save her home. It should never have been allowed to get this far. The Auckland Council should have nipped this nonsense in the bud the year she started her protest. I suspect the silly woman did not put the money aside and now the amount is so huge, including interest, that she is going to lose her home.

If she has put it aside and can pay at the last minute she will be able to end her protest on a high note having put the Auckland Council through hell for 11 years while achieving plenty of media coverage for herself.

I wonder what she will do with her life once this battle royale is over?
