Impertinent questions for University of Auckland vice-chancellor Stuart McCutcheon

MAARTEN HOLL/STUFF
University of Auckland vice-chancellor Stuart McCutcheon said such behavior has “no place in the university”.

I have a few impertinent questions to ask of the University of Auckland vice-chancellor. Stuart McCutcheon has said that the behaviour of an Auckland University academic who was fired last year has “no place in the university“.

Let’s look closely at the behaviour that McCutcheon says has no place at Auckland University and then I will ask my impertinent questions.

  1. An University of Auckland academic tried to shake a student’s hand and they refused.
  2. The student refused because of the senior academic’s gender/sex.
  3. The University of Auckland academic made a sexual discrimination complaint against the student.

The above behaviour was not viewed by McCutcheon as an example of a student sexually discriminating against an academic on the basis of their gender. Instead, the above behaviour was described and viewed as that of an academic forcing an advance on to an unwilling student.

The academic, not unreasonably, expected equal treatment from the student and expected the student to follow traditional New Zealand cultural norms. The fact that he dared to complain about the sexual discrimination and lodged a sexual discrimination complaint (because he was offended by the behaviour of the student towards him) seems to have sealed his fate and got him fired.

Progressive pyramid of victimhood status or identity politics pyramid of value

I have the following impertinent questions now for University of Auckland vice-chancellor Stuart McCutcheon.

  1. If the academic was a white woman and the student was a male Muslim would she have been fired for expecting him to shake her hand and for lodging a sexual discrimination complaint against him?
  2. If the academic was a Muslim female and the student was a white male would she have been fired for expecting him to not shake her hand and for lodging a sexual discrimination complaint against him for attempting to shake her hand?
  3. If the academic was a gay woman and the student was a male Muslim would she have been fired for expecting him to shake her hand and for lodging a sexual discrimination complaint against him?
  4. If the academic was a Muslim female and the student was a gay male would she have been fired for expecting him to not shake her hand and for lodging a sexual discrimination complaint against him for attempting to shake her hand?
  5. If the academic was a transgender woman and the student was a female Muslim would ‘she’ have been fired for expecting the female Muslim student to shake her hand and for lodging a sexual discrimination complaint against her for refusing to shake it?
  6. If the academic was a Muslim female and the student was a black male would she have been fired for expecting him to not shake her hand and for lodging a sexual discrimination complaint against him for attempting to shake her hand?
  7. If the academic was a black female and the student was a Muslim male would she have been fired for expecting him to shake her hand and for lodging a sexual discrimination complaint against him for refusing to shake her hand?
  8. If the academic was a transgender man and the student was a male Muslim would ‘he’ have been fired for expecting the male Muslim student to shake his hand and for lodging a sexual discrimination complaint against him for refusing to shake it?
  9. If the academic was a gay male and the student was a Muslim female would he have been fired for expecting her to shake his hand and for lodging a sexual discrimination complaint against her for refusing to shake his hand?
  10. Was the senior academic you fired a white male?
