Labour’s list Liz is dismayed

A Labour MP at a party summer camp during which teens were allegedly sexually assaulted says she had gone to bed thinking the youths there were being looked after and was “dismayed” to hear about the claims weeks later from media.

So reports TVNZ:

The camp, in February, was organised by the party’s youth wing and reports of under-age drinking and the alleged assaults have been a major embarrassment.

A 20-year-old man is reported to have put his hands down the pants of at least three of the teenagers, aged 16 to 18.

Police have started an inquiry and Labour has also launched its own investigation into its running of events, along with introducing a series of tighter rules.

Today, a Labour MP who had been a speaker at the camp but wasn’t involved in organising it, Liz Craig, told reporters when she went to bed before the alleged attacks, it appeared things were in order.

“I’m a non-drinker myself but there was alcohol at the quiz event that had been brought by the participants.

So, the quiz participants stocked a large walk-in chiller with alcohol that they brought with them? /Tui

However at the point I went to bed I was aware of two things,” she said.

The general noise and frivolity of a party atmosphere fueled by alcohol.  Oops, sorry, wrong script.

“One was that policies were in place so young people under 18 weren’t drinking …

So, a bunch of teenagers with a massive supply of alcohol are going to read and obey a policy? Clearly, Liz completely skipped the teenage years when growing up.

… and the second thing was that members of the organising team were staying up to oversee the evenings events.”

Except that they apparently all went to bed at 9pm.

Ms Craig said she had not been made aware of the events at the time.

“I heard about these alleged incidents in the media last week I was absolutely dismayed,” she said.

“Up until that point I had actually no idea these events had happened.”[…]

From Liz’s Facebook page: The photo in question [above] was of the quiz event, and once these issues emerged I took it down for privacy reasons – have removed the preview above for the same reason.”

There was apparently no need for privacy before: it was all beer and skittles (so to speak), a fun quiz with some alcohol involved, a good old group selfie, thumbs up all around.

One supporter rushing to Liz’s aid on her FB page pointed out “there’s 9 ppl in that pic. and can see about 8 drinks, 1st one being Pepsi.” Our helpful Whaleoil sleuth has identified four as alcoholic, one more was identified later as a beer and the other two look suspiciously like bottles of wine. But, there was one Pepsi, so that’s OK, then.

When you are in a hole, stop digging Liz. Explaining is losing.

Curiously, Liz’s Labour party page has this quote: “Liz also believes the current Government is letting Invercargill down.”

Hers is not the only page on the party site that needs revision, but I am not going to make it easy by pointing out the other nine.
