Let’s Talk

Where do you draw the line when it comes to tolerating another person’s cultural or religious beliefs or laws inside New Zealand?

Will you tolerate different values and beliefs if they do not impact you personally in any way?

What if their values include child marriage, polygamy, female genital mutilation, a woman having half the value of a man, men being allowed to beat their wives?

What if they impact you in some way ie the taxi driver won’t allow your guide dog in the taxi, they are offended when you say Merry Christmas, they won’t shake your hand or Hongi at the Marae.

What if they are actively lobbying to permanently change aspects of your culture ie Christmas, gender equality, freedom of speech?

What does tolerance even mean?

Is it a good thing to be tolerant or is it a foolish thing or is there a reasonable middle ground?
