I am fascinated and impressed by Whaleoil’s evolution over the last several years

A guest post

I am fascinated and impressed by the evolution of Whaleoil over the last several years. When I started reading it I was repelled by much of the anger and hate expressed by some of the contributors. And the use of bad language was so invasive. I am not above the occasional outburst but too much hides the message.

I don’t believe anger and hate solve the problem. We solve problems by accurate identification and then a discussion about how to fix it, with an open mind and thoughtfulness. A computer usually has more than one way to solve a problem. It can be a matter of trial and error. Our brains are similar to computers. If we feed information in using different thinking we may come up with different solutions.

The first time I really observed this (to me) amazing fact was when I was arguing with Roger Douglas over paying for school buses. I said that the buses were so decrepit that no one in their right mind would pay to ride in them. He responded that mine was a silly argument and that I should be pushing for safer buses if our children were riding in them. This sent me off in a different direction and taught me to think around the problem and to listen to other solutions instead of existing in an echo chamber.

Over the last several years Whaloil has developed into a community of thinking, caring people who build on the strengths of discussion with values and beliefs to the forefront. Freedom of expression is respected and concern for the individuals in the community has been demonstrated.

As an educator, I am fascinated by the fact that Whaleoil has broken its mould, which was based on negativity and anger, and redeveloped its persona into that of a true community made up of sentient individuals who care very much about their country and their friends.

Well done SB, Cam, the moderators, helpers and all the other participants.
