Here’s something to drop into a dinner party conversation

What if there is no atmospheric greenhouse effect?

If this were true there would be no atmospheric ‘greenhouse gases’. If there are no greenhouse gases then carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour etc in the atmosphere are completely benign.

And if this were true then there is absolutely zero human effect on the atmosphere and thus on the non-existent greenhouse effect and thus on the climate, regardless of what it is called, global warming, climate change, climate disruption, climate weirding, climate cancer, ad nauseum.

We could, then, put all of this climate research, carbon taxes and climate policies in a box labelled “Huge Mistake” and carry on with solving real problems like food and clean fresh water for all.

So where is all this coming from?  From NASA data, actually.

When NASA does real science out in space (as per their name) instead of adjusting temperature readings and pushing the climate barrow, surprising findings turn up.

The greenhouse effect theory was postulated in the early 19th century as a way of explaining the fact that the earth is warm and habitable when it really should not be.  Mr Kirchhoff had formulated the blackbody temperature of a ball of rock hurtling through space this far from the sun and had shown that the temperature should be minus 18 degrees Celsius. As we know, that is not the ‘average’ temperature of the earth, it is some 33 degrees warmer and this difference needed explaining and so the greenhouse effect theory was born.

But back to the blackbody radiation. NASA has calculated the blackbody temperatures for all the planets in the solar system and these are available in the Planetary Fact Sheets. NASA has also sent probes out to the planets and found out the composition of the planetary atmospheres and measured their temperature profiles.

The bright people who study this stuff have found that for Jupiter, Saturn, Saturn’s moon Titan, Uranus, Neptune, Venus and Earth there is a common phenomenon.

From one-tenth of the normal atmospheric pressure on earth, the temperature of all these bodies increases with pressure until they all exceed their predicted blackbody temperatures. Only some of those bodies have methane in their atmospheres, but none of them apart from planet earth have carbon dioxide in their atmospheres. And none have humans to cause human-induced climate change, and none can be taxed.

Well, that is an inconvenient truth!

NASA scientists have graphed this data in a paper and the result looks like this:

The NASA formulated blackbody temperature is also shown for comparison. It is clear that at one atmosphere pressure the temperatures are higher than predicted.

So do all these planets have a ‘greenhouse effect’ caused by greenhouse gases, affected by humans; or is something else at play here?

The NASA paper says: Quote:

A minimum atmospheric temperature, or tropopause, occurs at a pressure of around 0.1 bar in the atmospheres of Earth, Titan, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, despite great differences in atmospheric composition End of quote.

Venus does not quite follow the rule as the temperature there starts increasing at a very much much lower pressure. Titan, with large volumes of ethane and methane, exhibits an anti-greenhouse effect because its stratosphere absorbs so much of the sun’s energy.

Alan Siddons’ summary of all this is:   Quote:

If scientists of the past had known that the temperature of every planet with a sufficient atmosphere rises along with atmospheric pressure, and always exceeds its predicted temperature, do you think they would have come up with a theory that attributed extra heating to the presence of certain trace gases that occupy less than 1 percent of the Earth’s atmosphere?

No, of course not. Yet today that old trace-gas heating construct has taken root so firmly that contrary evidence goes ignored.

Such obstinacy is clearly the Greenhouse Theory at work.  End of quote.

Not convinced? Go and pump up Julie Anne Genter’s bicycle tyre. The more you pump, the higher the pressure, the hotter the pump will be in your hand. (Otherwise known as the Combined Gas Law.)
