Canada, Australia & our Pacific neighbours support the United States & Israel but we stupidly do not

Last year the United Nations General Assembly resolution chastising Israel for provoking strife with the Palestinians by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel brought a warning response from the United States ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley.

Haley threatened to withdraw United States funding to the United Nations, also saying that they would “remember it when so many countries call on us, as they come calling on us to pay even more and to use our influence for their benefit.”

The arrogance of New Zealand’s stance beggars belief. Flying in the face of the facts and the current impossibility of a two-state solution, (previously accepted by Israel but rejected time and again by the Palestinians) Jacinda Ardern maintains her “very clear position”. Quote.

New Zealand supports a two-state solution. Some of the things that we saw by international actors like the United States recently, those are decisions that should only be made in the context of a resolution around a two-state solution. It took us backwards not forwards.” End of quote.

Once more into the fray but again on the wrong side, New Zealand supported the Palestinian faction in last week’s United Nations resolution criticising Israel for their handling of rioting at the Gaza border with subsequent loss of life. This report from the Israel Institute of NZ. Quote.

“Another emergency session against Israel was held to condemn Israel (while systematically turning a blind eye to the world’s worst perpetrators of gross and systematic violations of human rights) – this time the emergency session was over the Gaza riots. A resolution tabled by Algeria, Turkey, and the State of Palestine charging Israel with “excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate force” while failing to mention Hamas or Islamic Jihad at all.

It is hard to fathom how Israel’s use of force can fairly be described as indiscriminate, considering that it has been revealed that over 80% of those killed in the Gaza border clashes were Hamas or Islamic Jihad operatives.” End of quote.

New Zealand is already out of step with Israel, the United States and now our Pacific neighbours who had the good sense to choose the right side. Quote.

“The six nations who joined Israel and the US in opposing the pro-Palestinian measure were Australia, Micronesia, Nauru, Togo, Solomon Islands and the Marshall Islands.” End of quote.

Our Pacific neighbours took notice of the threat from the United States and abstained from the 2017 vote.  Last week Australia, Fiji, Vanuatu, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands moved closer to Israel and the United States by voting against the latest United Nations resolution.”

New Zealand stupidly maintains its arrogant stance on the Palestinian/Israeli conflict ignoring both the facts on the Gaza conflict and the United States threat about remembering who did not support it in last year’s vote,

The recent United Nations vote against Israel indicates the tide may be turning as a result of the United State’s threat. Let’s hope we don’t need friends anytime soon because we may have run out of them.  Jacinda may count Justin Trudeau as a friend and ally, but Canada had the good sense to abstain from both United Nations resolutions.
