The World in One View

Drawn by artist Humphrey Phelps in 1847.

A beautifully drawn 19th century depiction of the whole World – Click on the image for a high res view.

Such maps were highly popular in schools and homes. Take note of the beautifully drawn ladies in their traditional or cultural dresses. This is far more than ‘just a map’, its a geography lesson.

This was a window to the world – I can just imagine how many kids and adults were fascinated and mesmerised by the detail and information this map provided at the time.

Also note the populations of the cities and the highest buildings. For those of you with a keen eye, try and find the hot air balloon.
