It appears someone has lost the script

A joint project between University of Alabama, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA, uses data gathered by advanced microwave sounding units on NOAA and NASA satellites to get accurate temperature readings for almost all regions of the Earth, including remote desert, ocean and rain forest areas where
reliable climate data are not otherwise available. The satellite-based instruments measure the temperature of the atmosphere from the surface up to an altitude of about eight kilometres above sea level.

The data is publicly available for download and calculating trends etc.  WUWT have recently published the August 2018 figures which show that the global composite temperature anomaly is +0.19 degrees Celsius  above seasonal average and the global climate trend since Dec. 1 1978: +0.13 degrees Celsius per decade.

Now we have been warned that 2 degrees Celsius is the absolute limit before all manner of catastrophes befall us and that the climate gods must be placated by paying billions of dollars to someone somewhere.

We must also cripple our oil and gas industry in Taranaki and drive all the farmers off the land with punitive emission targets on methane etc.

We are told that the 2 degree limit is just around the corner and we only have a very limited time in which to act in order to save the planet.

But …

At a global trend of 0.13 degrees per decade it will take 15.4 decades to get 2 degrees hotter than now; 154 years!

Ah ha! I hear you say, it is not 2 degrees hotter than now, it is 2 degrees hotter than “pre-industrial” that matters.

What exactly is 2 degrees hotter than pre-industrial?  Are we already at 0.5? 1.2? 1.8?  1.9?

That is a very interesting question and is the topic for another post.

What we can say is that currently the world is not cooperating with the model predictions.  The evil carbon dioxide levels keep marching ever higher and the temperatures do not keep pace as per prediction.

It is, indeed, an inconvenient truth.

The Arctic Sea Ice is not cooperating either.  Summers were supposed to be ice free by  2013 but that memo got lost in the post as well.

A bit over a million more square kilometres of ice coverage than at the low point in 2012.  Doesn’t really look like a downward death spiral to me.

However, I must bow to my superiors as Prince Charles said in May 2008 that there was only 18 months left to save the world, that was November 2009.

But he may have miscalculated as ten months later, in March 2009, he said that there was only 100 months left to save the world – extending it out to 2014

And now UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has said that if the world doesn’t change course by 2020, we run the risk of runaway climate change.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the date may simply keep on moving further into the future.
