If it is not about the bodies, then why?

Not being a resident in New Zealand when the Pike River disaster happened, I had a bit of catching up to do on the history.

When I saw the excellent graphics on One News @ Six the other night some alarm bells began ringing. (Annotations and arrows mine.)

With breathless excitement, the obligatory tears of relief, egged on by John Campbell, the grand plan was announced by ex-mine union boss Andrew Little.

TVNZ told us all about it and explained exactly what the $35 million (and counting) is going to buy.

There is a very solid concrete barrier at 30 m in, another barrier at 170 m up the access tunnel and then they will press on to the rockfall approximately 2.3 km up the access tunnel.

On the other side of that rockfall (30-50 m wide?) is the mine proper.? The rockfall is in the area shown as “Pit bottom” in the next graphic.

That graphic was created fairly soon after the explosion and the plan in the?official documentation names the victims at their localities more accurately. The 2010 graphic has been included as it is easier to read and is reasonably accurate.

The only two names on that plan that are outside the rockfall are the names of the two survivors who were in the access tunnel at the time of the first explosion and who got themselves out.? 31 men on the plan, two “walked” out and 29 are on the far side of the rockfall.

The rockfall is where the Pike River Mine Re-entry stops.? Huh?

We are being conned.? No one is entering the Pike River?Mine, they are opening up and entering an access tunnel to the mine.? What an easy out for blowhards Peters and Little who promised to be the first to enter the mine.

Why is a Dionne Warwick song playing in my mind?? “What’s it all about Alfie?”

What’s it all about, Andy?
Is it just for the glory you crave?
What’s it all about when you spend the cash, Andy?
Are we meant to take your words as true
Or are we meant to be fooled?
And if voters are fooled, Andy
Then I guess it was smart in the end
And if lies belong to the Ministers, Andy
What will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I believe there’s a heaven above, Andy
I know there’s something much more,
Something even non-believers can believe in
I believe in truth, Andy
Without real truth we just exist, Andy
Until you find the truth you’ve missed you’re nothing, Andy
When you talk let your brain lead the way
And you’ll find truth any day, Andy
