Breaking news: NZ censor rules that sharing or downloading the manifesto or the contents of it is now a criminal offence under NZ law

Whaleoil is currently doing everything it can to comply fully with the NZ Censor’s ruling this afternoon. We have censored all references
that we can find to the manifesto as well as any discussion of its contents inside published posts. We have removed screenshots of parts of the manifesto and we are also going through our comment sections just in case any one provided a link to the manifesto.

Please bring to our attention anything that we may have missed so that we can remove it immediately

Past posts have been censored in the following way.
Text has been replaced with either this image…

Or inside the text it will say [redacted by NZ censor]

The NZ censor has ruled that sharing or downloading the document or the contents of it is now a criminal offence under NZ law. Journalists can gain permission to hold copies of it but it is not currently clear who would grant the permission.

We don’t yet know if discussing the contents of the manifesto is illegal as that has not been made clear but to be safe for now we have censored our past articles in order to protect Whaleoil .

[…] A document written by the alleged Christchurch gunman has been labelled crude and promotive of murder and terrorism.[…]

On Saturday, the Office of Film and Literature Classification said the document has been officially classified as objectionable for a number of reasons.

[…] “It is objectionable under New Zealand law. It promotes, encourages and justifies acts of murder and terrorist violence against identified groups of people.”

Shanks said the document promotes, encourages and justifies acts of murder and terrorist violence against identified groups of people.

“It identifies specific places for potential attack in New Zealand, and refers to the means by which other types of attack may be carried out,” he said.

“It contains justifications for acts of tremendous cruelty, such as the deliberate killing of children.”

“We have dealt with terrorist promotional material before which was deliberately designed to inspire, encourage and instruct other like-minded individuals to carry out further attacks.”

Shanks said he recognises the document has been widely reported on and many New Zealanders may have already read it, “possibly seeking answers for why this dreadful atrocity took place”.

Those who have downloaded the document or printed it, should destroy any copies they have.

Whaleoil has fully complied with that requirement.

[…] “If you have a copy of this publication, delete or destroy it. If you see it, report it. Do not support the murderous objectives of its author by republishing or distributing it.”

However, Shanks said the office appreciated there would be a range of people who would be in possession of the document for “legitimate” purposes, including education, analysis and in-depth reporting.

“Those individuals can apply for exemptions, so they can legitimately access and hold a copy.”

[…] It is illegal for anyone in New Zealand to view, possess or distribute the video in any form, including through social media.
