Clinton and Lewinsky on a 1998 Abkhazia stamp.

The Story Behind the Dress

In November 1997, Monica Lewinsky told her confidant and supposed friend, Linda Tripp that she had in her possession a blue Gap dress that still bore the semen stain that resulted from her administering oral sex to President Clinton in February of that year.

Tripp called her literary agent, and fellow Clinton-hater, Lucianne Goldberg to report the news that evidence existed in Lewinsky’s closet that could prove a sexual relationship between Monica and the President. Goldberg and Tripp, according to published reports in both Time and Newsweek, discussed stealing the dress and turning it over to investigators. Goldberg admitted having such a discussion with Tripp, calling it a “Nancy Drew fantasy.”

In late November, Lewinsky mentioned to Tripp that she intended to have the dress, which she had been saving as a souvenir, dry-cleaned for a family event. Tripp, anxious to preserve the dress to nail the President, discouraged her from doing so. “I would tell my own daughter,” Tripp told her, that she should save the dress “for your own ultimate protection” should she later be accused of lying about the affair with Clinton. When Lewinsky expressed skepticism that it would ever come to that, Tripp told her that the dress made her look “really fat” and she shouldn’t wear it again in public.

The young Empress Catherine the Great.

Catherine the Great

Debunking the Horse Myth

The salaciousness of a rumour often helps it survive—take Catherine the Great and how she is remembered. Catherine has been slandered for several centuries.

During and after the reign of the flamboyant and powerful Empress Catherine II of Russia, whose long rule led to the modernization of the Russian Empire, many urban legends arose, some false and others based on true events, concerning her sexual behaviour.

Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia was so infamous for her sexual freedom that when she died there was even a sexually themed rumour. I learnt about Catherine the Great at school, about how she modernised Russia, pioneered women’s education, enlisted Voltaire to her cause and presided over the age of the Russian Enlightenment. Her kinky side, however, was rudely omitted from my education.

Catherine II of Russia (1729-1796) was one of history’s most unlikely rulers. After marrying into Russia’s Romanov family, she found herself part of a coup to unseat her husband and place her on the throne. The achievements of her reign, which lasted for 34 years, have often been overshadowed by her personal life, one of the most scandalous of her—or any—era. However, behind the rumour and gossip lay one of the most astute and skillful rulers in Russia’s long, turbulent history.

The rumour is that the lusty czarina was crushed to death while trying to make love to a stallion. The story holds that the harness holding the horse above her broke, and she was crushed. This story took root after her servants reported her visits to the stalls of Arabian stallions for long hours without supervision. Another story claiming that she died on the toilet when her seat broke under her is true only in small part: she did collapse in a bathroom from a stroke, but after that she died while being cared for in her bed. This tale was widely circulated and even jokingly referred to by Aleksandr Pushkin in one of his untitled poems. literal translation: “Decreed the orders, burned the fleets / And died boarding a vessel,” the last line can also be translated as “And died sitting down on the toilet.”) There existed also a version on alleged assassination, by spring blades hidden in a toilet seat.

Remembered as the “Goddess of Nanking”, Minnie Vautrin. When the Japanese army invaded Nanjing in December 1937, she and the other foreigners in the city, worked to protect the civilians in the Nanking Safety Zone. Ginling Girls College became a haven of refuge, at times harbouring up to 10,000 women in a college designed to support between 200 and 300.

I Will never Forget!

The Rape of Nanjing

Warning: This story includes memories of extreme acts of violence and trauma.

Between an estimated 20 to 30 thousand women were raped by the Japanese soldiers during the six weeks of the Nanjing/Nanking Massacre, most were brutally killed afterwards. The Japanese soldiers even raped girls less than ten years old, women over seventy years’ old, pregnant women, and nuns. Rampant raping took place in the streets or at religious worshiping places during the day. Many women were gang raped. Some Japanese even forced fathers to rape their daughters, sons to rape their mothers, etc. Those who resisted were killed immediately.

The Japanese organized burning of buildings in the city. After they had set fire to buildings using either gasoline or some other inflammable chemicals, they hid, waited for, and killed people who came to extinguish the fire. Numerous people were killed by fire. Nanjing, once a beautiful historical city, was burned to ashes by the Japanese.

The Nanking Massacre was an episode of mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against the residents of Nanjing (Nanking), then the capital of the Republic of China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The massacre is also known as the Rape of Nanking or, using Pinyin Romanisation, the Nanjing Massacre or Rape of Nanjing.

Following a bloody victory in Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese War, the Japanese turned their attention towards Nanking. Fearful of losing them in battle, Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek ordered the removal of nearly all official Chinese troops from the city, leaving it defended by untrained auxiliary troops. Chiang also ordered the city held at any cost, and forbade the official evacuation of its citizens. Many ignored this order and fled, but the rest were left to the mercy of the approaching enemy.

Mary Vincent walks her two dogs, Danny, left, and Mikey. Mary, in agonizing pain, bleeding profusely, did not die. She slowly made it to the road where a stranger rushed her to the hospital.

The Amazing Survival Story of Mary Vincent

WARNING: This post contains details of violence and sexual assault

Lawrence Singleton was a monster. Anyone who kills an innocent human being in cold blood is a monster. Anyone who rapes another human being is a monster. And that was just where Lawrence Singleton’s crimes began. He earned the nickname The Mad Chopper for the worst possible reason. He wasn’t your ordinary cruel, sadistic maniac. He truly was a monster, with a resentment and hatred of humanity that makes someone like Ted Bundy look compassionate. Be glad Lawrence Singleton is no longer on this Earth — he was the closest thing to evil incarnate imaginable.

In 1998, a woman raised one of her metal prosthetic hands in court and pointed at Lawrence Singleton, who raped and mutilated her in California when she was a runaway teenager.

Singleton, then 70, showed no emotion during Mary Vincent’s 10 minutes of testimony as the only prosecution witness in the penalty phase of his trial for murdering a prostitute in Tampa.

“I was raped and I had my hands cut off,” Vincent said quietly of the 1978 attack, when she was 15. “He used a hatchet. He left me to die.”
