## Electoral Commission takes heavy hand to Satire Site

The Electoral Enrolment Centre is trying to shut down the satire site Should-A.com.

In our previous story about Should-A.com’s parody of the referendum question we prophetically said “The United States has parody and satire protection, but New Zealand doesn’t […] I can’t imagine the Electoral Office taking action over this but it’s worth remembering that free speech involving remix can be effectively censored through legal enforcement of copyright and trademarks.” …unfortunately our imagination wasn’t good enough and the Electoral Enrolment Centre have sent a copyright infringement / takedown notice to Should-A.com about misuse of the “orange elector character”.

Good grief, haven’t they got something better to do?

17 (seventeen) is the natural number following 16 and preceding 18. It is prime.

In mathematics

Seventeen is the 7th prime number. The next prime is nineteen, with which it forms a twin prime. 17 is the sum of the first four primes. 17 is the sixth Mersenne prime exponent, yielding 131071. 17 is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part and real part of the form 3n − 1.

17 is the third Fermat prime, as it is of the form $2^{2^2} + 1$, and it is also a Proth prime. Since 17 is a Fermat prime, heptadecagons can be drawn with compass and ruler. This was proven by Carl Friedrich Gauss.[1] Another consequence of 17 being a Fermat prime is that it is not a Higgs prime for squares or cubes.

17 is the only positive Genocchi number that is prime, the only negative one being -3. It is also the third Stern prime.

As 17 is the least prime factor of the first twelve terms of the Euclid-Mullin sequence, it is the thirteenth term.

Seventeen is the aliquot sum of two numbers, the odd discrete biprimes 39 and 55 is the base of the 17-aliquot tree.

There are exactly seventeen two-dimensional space (plane symmetry) groups. These are sometimes called wallpaper groups, as they represent the seventeen possible symmetry types that can be used for wallpaper.

Like 41, the number 17 is a prime that yields primes in the polynomial n2 + n + p, for all positive n < p – 1.

Consider a sequence of real numbers between 0 and 1 such that the first two lie in different halves of this interval, the first three in different thirds, and so forth. The maximum possible length of such a sequence is 17 (Berlekamp & Graham, 1970, example 63).

Either 16 or 18 unit squares can be formed into rectangles with perimeter equal to the area; and there are no other natural numbers with this property. The Platonists regarded this as a sign of their peculiar propriety; and Plutarch notes it when writing that the Pythagoreans “utterly abominate” 17, which “bars them off from each other and disjoins them”.[2]

17 is the tenth Perrin number, preceded in the sequence by 7, 10, 12.

In base 9, the smallest prime with a composite sum of digits is 17.

17 is known as the Feller number, after the famous mathematician William Feller who taught at Princeton University for many years. Feller would say, when discussing an unsolved mathematical problem, that if it could be proved for the case n = 17 then it could be proved for all positive integers n. He would also say in lectures, “Let’s try this for an arbitrary value of n, say n=17.”

Similar to Feller, Prof. Vadim Khayms of Stanford University is also known to use 17 as an arbitrary value during lectures. His Computational Mathematics for Engineers course includes 17 lectures.

17 is the least random number[3], according to the Hackers’ Jargon File. There is a proven theorem that 17 is the value most likely to be picked as a “random” number when such is needed in journalism which is derived from the Feller number.[4]

It is a repunit prime in hexadecimal (11).

It is believed that the minimum possible number of givens for a sudoku puzzle with a unique solution is 17, but this has yet to be proven.

There are 17 orthogonal curvilinear coordinate systems (to within a conformal symmetry) in which the 3-variable Laplace equation can be solved using the separation of variables technique.

17 is the first number that can be written as the sum of a positive cube and a positive square in two different ways; that is, the smallest n such that x3 + y2 = n has two different solutions for x and y positive integers. The next such number is 65.

## He's dreamin'

Obama’s plan: Get rid of all nukesPresident Barack Obama last night launched a drive to rid the world of nuclear weapons. He said the United States, as the only country to have used nuclear bombs in warfare, had a moral responsibility to lead the campaign to abolish… [NZ Herald Politics]

I have always picked Obama as a fool and it seems everytime he opens his gob to recite something from the teleprompter in order to maintain the illusion he is a great orator he proves it.

He reckons we should get rid of all nukes. And in the immortal words of Darryl Keerigan “He’s Dreamin'”

You cannot un-invent something, you cannot unthink something. Once invented, once thought, once designed these things are out of Pandora’s Box never to return.

The man is a complete fool, leading the nation of fools that elected him. Great Orator my arse, the man is a gibbering idiot without his teleprompter.

## Saudis flexing muscles now limp-dick in Whitehouse

The Saudis seem to know what is what when it comes to Obama. their welcome message to the new President was actually a veiled threat;

“If the U.S. wants to continue playing a leadership role in the Middle East and keep its strategic alliances intact — especially its ‘special relationship’ with Saudi Arabia — it will have to drastically revise its policies vis-a-vis Israel and Palestine.”

“Unless the new U.S. administration takes forceful steps to prevent any further suffering and slaughter of Palestinians, the peace process, the U.S.-Saudi relationship and the stability of the region are at risk,””

and just in case there might be a little misunderstanding about the psturing he goes on to intimate that, upon the promptings of Iran, Saudi Arabia will;

Let there be no mistake, the Muslim nations want the destruction of Israel and will use the preceived timidity of Obama as a lever to extract it.

Add to that increased domestic tensions in Pakistan and we most surely are looking at a major MidEast/West confrontation. With the UN firmly under the spell of Jihadi influences then the prospects for Israel seem dull.

## More on Bio-fuels

Many of my loyal readers will know that I have a fair bit of knowledge about the bio-fuels industry, the scams and the rots and the non-commercial viability of the industry.

Of course peak oilers, and haven’t you just noticed the Standard go all peak oil lately, will have you believe that bio-fuels are the way of the future. Its bollocks of course but then they are socialists so they know best.

Some school kids in in the US have done a little project looking into bio-fuels….guess what they found out….yep its a crock of shit.

Four high school students managed to put together a paper arguing that ethanol is bad from an economic, social, and environmental perspective. They then submitted the paper to a prestigious peer-reviewed journal, and got accepted for publication (PDF version of their paper here). High school students. Of course, the government can’t figure that out, which is why it’s busy subsidizing ethanol production on the grounds that it’s good from an economic, social, and environmental perspective.

Who’s right? The high school kids, of course.

From an economic perspective, the kids argue that it doesn’t make sense until oil hits about \$233/barrel. Uhm, oil does not cost that much. From a social perspective, diverting corn from food to fuel increases the price of corn products, making it more expensive for poor people to buy that food source. So do all agricultural subsidies, but whatever. Meanwhile, environmentally, ethanol production generates more carbon dioxide than regular-old gasoline production does. Nuclear power, meanwhile, is best. But, you know, we don’t want nuclear power because it’s, uhm, scary and might lead to super powers if anyone is exposed to nuclear waste plus a spider.

When high school kids can smell a rat, it’s time for the rest of us dupes to take off our blinders and see the ethanol business for what it is — a giant tax-money sucking scam.

Peer-reviewed no less! The gold standard of socialist justification for everything. Stick that in your hemp pipes and smoke it.

Power Line – The Honeymoon: Still Over!

In The Honeymoon: Over Before It Began!, I noted that Islamic protesters in Indonesia were blaming Barack Obama for Israel’s attack on Gaza even though he hasn’t yet been inaugurated. This calls into question, as I put it in that post, liberals’ “touching faith that the election of Barack Obama will cause America to be better loved by people around the world, including those who are ideologically hostile to the United States.”

Here’s more evidence that the honeymoon is already over, this time from Iran. Note that Obama says he wants to change our relationship with Iran by treating it with more “respect.” Here, demonstrators in Tehran walk on a poster of Obama:

The great black hope of the liberal “progressives” will prove to be a massive failure. Already Islamist protesters the world over are burning Obama in effigy. Obama himself thinks that opeing dialogue with terrorists will be helpful. I have news for him, it will only be useful if those terrorists are sitting in chains as we interrogate them. As John at Powerline comments “The point, of course, is that if anyone thinks that electing Obama as President will cause us to be loved by our enemies, just because he isn’t George Bush, that person is doomed to disappointment.”

## 61 ex-Gitmo terrorists back killing and maiming

Keith Locke should take careful note of this report from Reuters.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Pentagon said on Tuesday that 61 former detainees from its military prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, appear to have returned to terrorism since their release from custody.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said 18 former detainees are confirmed as “returning to the fight” and 43 are suspected of having done in a report issued late in December by the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Morrell declined to provide details such as the identity of the former detainees, why and where they were released or what actions they have taken since leaving U.S. custody.

“This is acts of terrorism. It could be Iraq, Afghanistan, it could be acts of terrorism around the world,” he told reporters.

Morrell said the latest figures, current through December 24, showed an 11 percent recidivism rate, up from 7 percent in a March 2008 report that counted 37 former detainees as suspected or confirmed active militants….

The Pentagon said it considers a former detainee’s return to terrorism “confirmed” when evidence shows direct involvement in terrorist activities. U.S. officials see a “suspected” terrorism links when intelligence shows a plausible link with terrorist activities.

“Propaganda does not qualify as a terrorist activity,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

It is simply madness that Keith Locke thinks we can even contemplate taking in this bunch of terrorist scum.

## Bush and Condi throw Israel to the wolves

George W. Bush and Condoleeza Rice have betrayed Israel at the last minute and essentially thrown them to the wolves of the jihad enablers and the UN. When the US failed to veto a Security Council resolution that called for a ceasefire in Gaza Bush and Condi were complicit in abandonment of Israel to the wolves of the jihadists.

The Security Council resolution makes a mockery of Israel’s right of self-defense. In fact, it makes no mention of a right of self-defense at all. Eight thousand mortars have rained down on Israel from the Gaza Strip over a period of eight years. Israel withdrew every Israeli man, woman and child from Gaza three and a half years ago. Yet the United Nations draws an equivalence between a terrorist organization whose very modus operandi is to target civilians and a state whose aim is to protect civilians, Israeli and Palestinian. Arab states could scarcely contain their glee. The U.K. went out in front and accepted the idea of a much stronger resolution instead of a Security Council presidential statement, and Secretary of State Rice rolled over and played dead within minutes.

Every state has a right to self defense and Israel perhaps more so than any other. Formed because no-one else in the world would protect jews and formed by UN resolution it has been at war with its Muslim neighbours from the first minute of its conception. A war that Israel doesn’t want mind you, but a war they must fight lest the ravages of Nazism return through Arab hegemony and an Islamic Caliphate.

## Herald Editorial condemns Priest

The actions of an extremist Catholic priest in desecrating the Wellington memorial to Nobel Prize winner Yitzhak Rabin undo any good that a thousand others protesting against Israel might have hoped
to achieve.

Father Gerard Burns daubed a drop of his own blood mixed with red paint across the Rabin memorial, inspired perhaps by an equally misguided Auckland cleric who poured his own blood on the carpet of the US consulate at the beginning of the Iraq war. At least in that repulsive act the first priest was, in the twisted logic of his protest, at the right place.

For Father Burns to desecrate the Rabin memorial is not only in breach of any civilised standard of protest but utterly wrongheaded in terms of his target. Rabin, a former Israeli general-turned-two-time-Prime-Minister, was perhaps the greatest hope for peace between Jews and Palestinians in a generation. He was assassinated by an ultra-conservative Jew because he was too accommodating to the Palestinians in seeking a lasting peace. He died after a rally for peace, with the words of Shir LaShalom, or Song for Peace, found bloodied in his pocket. He had been honoured, with Yasser Arafat and Shimon Peres, by the Nobel judges. The memorial in central Wellington marks that commitment to peace.

Further they agree with Friends of Israel;

The Friends of Israel group rightly calls for the Catholic Church to discipline the priest and apologise to Jews in New Zealand, for whom desecration of their monument causes deep offence. The vandalism has received worldwide attention, the kind of attention that shames Catholics of goodwill and undermines their own public stands for justice and peace. The organisers of the Wellington march opposing Israel’s heavy-handed military action in the Gaza strip should also demand an apology from Father Burns. They must know that their message against the killings of civilians, including children, is diverted and made hollow by a calculated insult to Jews everywhere.

Father Burns should be de-frocked and booted from the Church for desecration of the Rabin memorial. One wonders what the Catholic Bishop of Wellington and the Bishop of New Zealand have to say on this matter.

## John Armstrong: Key did right thing, just a few steps late

John Armstrong: Key did right thing, just a few steps lateIn his handling of the first “crisis” to confront him as Prime Minister, John Key has been taught a few instructive lessons about not just keeping in step with public opinion, but the need to stay ahead of it. In sending an Air… [NZ Herald Politics]

John Armstrong has his pinko coloured spectacles on again this morning in berating John Key for doing too little, too late about the losers stuck in Bangkok.

Now a couple of points here. Phil Goff would have known the 757’s were broken, he was the Defence Minister just 4 weeks ago and would have been informed that the planes were broken and in the US. Quite how the NZ government was supposed to deploy them to help is beyond me. Phil Goff also thinks a valid contigency plan is to sponge off your mates by asking Australia for help.

Quite apart from all that I fail to see why people are sitting on their chuff in Bangkok waiting for the New Zealand government to save their sorry asses.

I had a couple of mates stuck in Thailand, they both got themelves home with no help either asked for or received from the government. One took the bus to Phuket and flew to Singapore from there and the other took a train to Malayasia and flew home from there. A bit of lateral thinking and Kiwi can do spirit.

It seems to me that 9 years of Labour have knobbled the Kiwi Spirit, essentially emasculating us from thinking and doing for ourselves, instead waiting for the munificence of the the government to save us.
