Instead of keeping the New Zealand media busy with daily housing policy releases, poverty claims and other destructive, whining and non-contributing behaviour like Labour’s people do, John Key is busting his balls for the country’s exporters and foreign exchange earners.

Mr Key and Trade Minister Todd McClay are leading a 22-strong business delegation on a whirlwind two-day visit to Indonesia aimed at boosting ties between the two countries.

Indonesia is New Zealand’s 13th largest trading partner, with two-way trade worth about $1.6 billion a year.

But with a population of more than 250 million, a growing economy and an expanding middle class, there’s room for New Zealand exporters to do more.

One of the stumbling blocks in the relationship has been Indonesia’s import restrictions on beef products, which are the result of a domestic political push for Indonesia to become self sufficient.

Since 2010 there’s been an 80 per cent decline in beef exports to Indonesia – once New Zealand’s second-largest market for beef products – and the accumulated impact for the sector is now estimated at between $500 million and $1 billion. Read more »

Biltong-machine-bbFor Christmas I was given a Biltong machine.

They are pretty simple, and you can make one yourself if you are so inclined, but this one is easy to assemble and works like a charm. It features:

  • Built in Extractor Fan
  • Stainless Steel Food Grade Diffuser (Heat Pad Air Flow Regulator)
  • Brass bulb holder
  • Aluminium Hanging Rods x 3
  • Food grade plastic hanging hooks x 6
  • 60 Watt light bulb (an old-fashioned proper light bulb, not a gay energy-efficient one)
  • Assembly Instructions and Recipes
  • Marinade Bag

You need more meat hooks than that, but supermarkets and hardware stores have small meat hooks for bugger all.

SOLVED: The whole meat gives you cancer thingy…

The Economist reports on the solution to the whole meat gives you cancer palaver…add beer.

GRILLING meat gives it great flavour. This taste, though, comes at a price, since the process creates molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which damage DNA and thus increase the eater’s chances of developing colon cancer. For those who think barbecues one of summer’s great delights, that is a shame. But a group of researchers led by Isabel Ferreira of the University of Porto, in Portugal, think they have found a way around the problem. When barbecuing meat, they suggest, you should add beer.   Read more »

After beef to India is Labour’s next big thing going to be pork to Iran?

Andrew Little is showing almost daily what a complete tool he is.

His latest brain fart is to suggest that we ignore the US for beef exports and instead send our beef to India…you know where cows are sacred.

Mr Little has suggested trade negotiators and exporters of dairy and beef products should turn away from the TPP region and instead focus on India and Indonesia.

It appears the pretender to the prime ministership is unaware New Zealand already has an FTA with Indonesia as part of the historic Asean-CER deal, launched by Helen Clark in 2004 and completed by Mr Groser in 2009. As a result, bone-in meat is already tariff free and boneless cuts will become tariff free in 2020.  For dairy, almost all tariffs are now below 5% and falling.  Tariffs on wholemilk powder, butter and cheese are zero.

Maybe Mr Little thinks a Labour trade minister would have done better but, even were that so, it’s hardly an argument not to take what the TPP has put on the table.   Read more »

Richard Branson hands in his man card to become a fussy eater

Richard Branson has decided that he won’t eat meat anymore.

Richard Branson gave up beef earlier this year.

“More and more people recognise that conventional meat production can have truly devastating environmental impacts,” he wrote in a blog about producing food for future generations as part of World Food Day on Thursday.

“It’s one of the reasons I gave up eating beef earlier this year, and it looks like I am not the only one. Surprisingly, for myself, I haven’t missed it at all.

“If we could get many other people to do the same, we would be healthier, and we would help sustain the beautiful biodiversity we are losing in the rainforests.”

Branson is referring to the increasing demand for meat as the world’s population of  7 billion grows and the impact this has on the environment.   Read more »

More hand outs to bludging farmers

The Taxpayers’ Union is highlighting yet another example of farmers with their hands out.  This time sheep and beef farmers are getting a cool $15 million from Steven Joyce for genetic engineering research. It blogs:

As Mr Joyce goes on to point out in the release, New Zealand already leads the world in pastoral animal and plant genetics.

“As a nation, we are already leading the world in pastoral animal and plant genetics. This partnership will help us maintain this critical position and to continue to build on it through further research and development in sheep and beef genetics.”

The first part of that paragraph is correct – NZ does lead the word. What is not clear is why taxpayers need to stump up to keep us there. Why does this multi-billion dollar export industry suddenly need the Government pouring millions into it? Expecting increases in farmers’ profits is not justification.

This funding is for good headlines, not good economics. What other industries have their normal research and development costs borne by the taxpayer?

Donkey Con: Wal-Mart selling fox meat as donkey meat in China

The Chinese lectured us over food safety but things are pretty bad in their own country…Wal-Mart has just been busted for selling fox meat as donkey meat.

While other news outlets are writing about the scam, we here at WOBH are providing you with a buyers guide about how to tell the difference between fox meat and donkey meat so that you aren’t ripped off when buying and consuming donkey meat.

Whether in Britain or in China, no one wants to think they’re eating a familiar meat product only to discover they’re really eating an exotic, as one unfortunate Wal-Mart customer in northern China experienced recently, when his “strange” tasting donkey meat turned out to be fox.

But telling meats apart can be tricky! Even experienced beef eaters last year seemingly couldn’t tell cow apart from horse when it was smothered in lasagna; it gets all the trickier when it comes to distinguishing donkey, which far less of the world is familiar with, from fox, which seemingly no one eats on a regular basis.

Horse meat? Meh…how about Giraffe

With all the fuss in Europe over a bit of tasty horse meat you could forgiven for thinking this is a problem.

In South Africa they have found out that they have been eating donkey and water buffalo burgers instead of beef.

Research released this week found that donkey, water buffalo and other unconventional ingredients had been found in almost two-thirds of hamburgers and sausages tested in Africa’s largest economy.
