Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s New Year’s resolution is to win the next mayoral election.

Ford was the first in line to file his nomination papers on Thursday morning, CP24 reports. Thursday is the first day mayoral and city council hopefuls can register to get their name on the October municipal election ballot.

“I’ve been the best mayor that this city has ever had,” Ford told reporters.

The Brown Defence continues to gain traction in local body politics

The Brown Defence (“no matter what I’ve done wrong, it is personal and won’t affect my ability to perform in an official capacity“) is gaining momentum as a credible response to any wrongdoing.

Whanganui’s youngest councillor is facing a drugs charge after his house was raided by police.

Jack Bullock, 23, was arrested on Friday as part of a wider police operation in Whanganui, in which 17 people were arrested.

He was charged with possession of cannabis after police arrived at his home with a search warrant, he said yesterday.

“I’m not overly happy about it, but I’m taking each day as it comes. I just know I do have that support out there, and that won’t change with what I’m facing at the moment.”

Sounds like he’s not happy about getting caught, but the people are still behind him.  But wait, the Brown Defence is still to play out in full   Read more »

I bet she was registered… a gay three-way, no less

Nicole Pryor at Stuff reports

A teacher who suggested a threesome to two gay male students has been charged with serious misconduct.

In a decision released today the New Zealand Teachers Council disciplinary tribunal suspended her practising certificate, as well as requiring her to tell any future employer about the decision.

At any new job she would also have to arrange a guidance programme, to be held by another teacher, to establish professional boundaries between teachers and students.

The teacher, whose name was suppressed, invited a family friend’s son to board with her after she split from her husband.

The boarder, who she knew was going to be a year 13 student at the school where she taught, moved in with her in 2010 before the school year started.

They communicated over Skype and text messaging when she said things such as: “Oh I love you and care about you, and I’ll see you after school.”   Read more »

Megalomaniac mayor won’t stand down

Perhaps it is part of the job description that once you are a Mayor, you no longer answer to the public for anything at all.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s lawyer said today the mayor is “considering” rehab, a day after saying he was embarrassed by a new video showing him in a rambling rage, threatening to “murder” someone.

Dennis Morris told The Associated Press today that Ford is “considering his options,” including treatment. But he said “it’s best we hear from his lips.”

Morris said Ford needs to say he what he plans to do himself because “when you go left, he goes right.”

Morris said yesterday was a defining day for the mayor of Canada’s largest city. The mayor said he was “extremely, extremely inebriated” in the video and “embarrassed” by it.

Ford admitted in a stunning confession Tuesday that he smoked crack in a “drunken stupor” about a year ago. Police said last week they have a video of him that appears to show him smoking crack.

The mayor’s travails were taking their toll on his supporters. Canada’s finance minister became emotional when asked about Ford, a longtime friend. His mother and sister appeared on television.

His mother defended him yesterday, saying she has advised him to work on his “huge weight problem” as well as his drinking problem, and watch the company he keeps. But she insisted that her son, who has acknowledged that he smoked crack about a year ago in a “drunken stupor,” is not an addict and did not need to enter rehab

Clearly just a private family issue.

Nothing to do with the Office of the Mayor at all.

Leave the family some time and space to sort it out please.   Read more »

Crack smoking Mayor refuses to comment, won’t resign… familiar game plan

You have to laugh, otherwise you’d cry.

Instead of hounding Len Brown, the NZ Herald are incredulous that Toronta mayor Rob Ford won’t resign after a video of him smoking crack has surfaced

Toronto’s Mayor, Rob Ford, has refused once more to resign, even after the Canadian city’s police chief revealed that investigators have a video reportedly showing him smoking crack.

“The mayor does appear in that video,” Chief Bill Blair told a news conference yesterday, months after Ford first denied illicit drug use. “As a citizen of Toronto I am disappointed.”

Ford refused to address the allegations in detail, but declared: “I have no reason to resign.”
