Australia to hold inquiry into halal certification

The Australian Senate is going to inquire into halal certification:

Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi won Senate support today for a six-month inquiry into all certification schemes, including those for organic, kosher, halal and genetically modified foods.

Senator Bernardi wants the investigation to also inquire whether the public is provided enough information about certifiers? financial records.

The Government lent support to Senator Bernardi?s motion and it passed 34-30.

?I haven?t been able to ascertain what the cost of this religious tax is to individual companies or the overall cost to the Australian consumer,? Senator Bernardi said earlier this year

I await howls of outrage over Tony Abbott’s latest comments + Sledge of the Day

Tony Abbott is not one to mince words…and he has got stuck into the Greens over their attack on toys?and who should or shouldn’t pay with them…yes…they are attacking toys.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has weighed in on a debate about gender-specific toys in the lead-up to Christmas, saying boys should be boys and girls should be girls

Greens senator Larissa Waters has backed a “No Gender December” campaign, aimed at breaking down stereotypes around buying dolls for girls and trucks for boys.

But Abbott, a conservative who has three grown-up daughters, said parents should be allowed to do what was in the best interests of their children.

“I certainly don’t believe in that kind of political correctness,” Abbott told Channel Nine television.

“Let boys be boys, let girls be girls – that’s always been my philosophy – and above all else, let parents do what they think is in the best interests of their children.”

Gaybies? Seriously Stuff? Come on

That was the headline on Stuff’s home page…a story about ‘Gaybies’.

When you go to the article though the headline is more realistic and the story isn’t about gay babies at all, but rather it is about babies being brought up in same-sex households.

Children raised by same-sex parents fare just as well in their education, emotional and social development as those raised by heterosexual parents, new research shows.

The report on same sex-parented families in Australia, commissioned by the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS), found “there is now strong evidence that same-sex-parented families constitute supportive environments in which to raise children”.

The findings are at odds with Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi’s recent comments that the “gold standard” for children’s development is having a biological mother and father who are married.

Report author Deb Dempsey, who reviewed all the research on same sex-parented families, said there was a wealth of evidence that showed the children were doing fine. ? Read more »
