Dick Cheney

An economic lesson for Labour they seem to have forgotten

The Labour party wants to raise taxes, add in the Greens tax increases and their fondness for keynesian stimulus spending, you really wonder if they understand basic economics.

You simply cannot tax a nation to prosperity.

Who better to explain the Laffer Curve than the guy who it named after, Arthur Laffer:

The IEA was delighted to host renowned economist Dr Arthur Laffer on 27th June. He was in the UK advocating lower and flatter taxes as the key to economic growth. He suggests high tax rates alter people’s behaviour and act as a disincentive to work.

Cheney’s daughter marries girlfriend

Sydney Morning Herald

Arch-conservative Dick Cheney’s daughter has got married:

THE former US vice-president Dick Cheney says he is delighted his lesbian daughter has married her long-term partner. Mary Cheney and Heather Poe, who have two children, were married in Washington DC, where gay marriage has been legal since 2010.

“Mary and Heather have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognised,” a Cheney family statement said. “Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much-loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness.”

The wedding came amid fierce debate about gay marriage, after the President, Barack Obama, came out in favour if it. His likely Republican rival, Mitt Romney, opposes same-sex marriage.

Mary Cheney, 43, confirmed the news on her Facebook page, according to People magazine. “Very happy to announce that as of this morning, Heather and I are legally married (at least in DC),” she wrote.

Contrary to popular belief he did have a heart

The Telegraph

Contrary to popular belief he did have a heart, now Dick Cheney has a new one:

Dick Cheney, the former US Vice President, is recovering in a Virginia hospital after undergoing a heart transplant.

Kara Ahern, a spokeswoman for Cheney, issued a statement saying the former Vice President would be forever grateful to his unknown heart donor.

“Dick Cheney is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia after undergoing heart transplant surgery on Saturday, March 24, 2012.

“In 2010, Mr. Cheney had a Left Ventricular Assist Device implanted for treatment of end stage heart failure. The former Vice President has been on the cardiac transplant list for more than 20 months.

“Although the former Vice President and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift.

“Former Vice President Cheney is thankful to the teams of doctors and other medical professionals at Inova Fairfax and George Washington University Hospital for their continued outstanding care.”

A post for 9/11 truthers

via Boing Boing

For those truthers who for whatever reason still think that something other than a mere plane crash brought down the World Trade Center towers, you could be right, just not about the involvement of Dick Cheney.

“If my theory is correct, tonnes of aluminium ran down through the towers, where the smelt came into contact with a few hundred litres of water,” Christian Simensen, a scientist at SINTEF, an independent technology research institute based in Norway, said in a statement released Wednesday.

“From other disasters and experiments carried out by the aluminium industry, we know that reactions of this sort lead to violent explosions.”

Given the quantities of the molten metal involved, the blasts would have been powerful enough to blow out an entire section of each building, he said. This, in turn, would lead to the top section of each tower to fall down on the sections below.

The sheer weight of the top floors would be enough to crush the lower part of the building like a house of card, he said.

For the technically minded and sanctimonious know it all limp dicks like Lynn Prentice here is a little video about Thermite reactions.

Still Hunting…blogging is light

Today it was Quail. Tomorrow is Pheasant and Fallow Deer. Maybe a Mallard or two.

I spent all day in the Kaingaroa Forest chasing Quail with my new Beretta AL391 Urika from Hamills and Beretta. This is the first time I have hunted Quail and also the first time I have hunted with dogs trained to flush birds. Watching the two dogs work is a real pleasure. Safety is paramount though and so  I checked first to see that no one with the surname Cheney had a permit for Kaingaroa.

I was told that Quail shooting is a real rush and after flushing a few coveys today I am hooked. Until today my new shotgun hadn’t been fired at game and on the first covey that flushed I bagged a hen. My shooting coach was impressed telling me that normally people miss quail because of the sped and mayhem of the flush.

I also loved seeing the pig hunters driving down the road with a dog on the bonnet of the ute. Caught up with some Mongrel Mob fellas who had nailed 4 pigs before 10am. They looked pretty pleased with themselves.

Kaingaroa is a big place…and I have walked probably half of it today. As I said tomorrow I am going after Pheasant and will also have a crack at some Fallow around dusk with my Tikka .308 from Hamills.

Nathans Dodgy Directors appear in court

Dodgy Nathans Finance director John Hotchin and two of his co-directors have appeared in the Auckland District Court today on criminal charges relating to the failed finance company.

Hotchin is the brother of Hanover Finance founder Mark and faces three charges under the Securities Act.

His co-directors, Donald Young and Kenneth Moses (known as Roger) face six charges each.

I know a fair bit about this crowd and their nice little money-go-round between Nathans Finance and the parent company VTL Group. I just wish i had taken photos with my cellphone of the whiteboard diagrams I saw in their board room on numerous ocassions.

I am sure the Serious fraud Office though have pieced it all together and so whatever is coming their way they richly deserve it.
