The Police Commissioner Made A Deal With Leigh And Devine. In 1935, Police Commissioner McKay decided to speak with Devine and Leigh to get them to stop ordering attacks and cut the cocaine distribution. It was either they stop picking on each other and pedalling coke, or the entire police force would find a way to shut down every shady business they both had. So they agreed.

Kate Leigh “Queen of the Underworld”

Brothel Madams to Crime Moguls: These Women Terrorised Sydney with Their Fierce Gang Rivalry. Dubbed the “Worst Woman in Sydney,” Tilly Devine was the Queen of the criminal underworld in Woolloomooloo in the 1920s. She spent years as a prostitute and ran a string of brothels, in addition to heading a razor blade gang.

Not far behind her in the criminal ranks, was rival razor gang leader and booze bootlegger Kate Leigh. Leigh was the Queen of Surry Hills, but she had her eye on becoming the crime lord of Sydney and would stop at nothing to dethrone Devine. In addition to terrorising Sydney, the two would have brawls in the streets and attack each other’s businesses.

Tilly Devine was born Matilda Twiss and began her career of prostitution as a teenager in England. She didn’t take on the name Tilly Devine until she met Jim Devine, an Australian serviceman, in 1917. She married him and followed him back to Australia in 1919, where she managed to accrue 79 convictions in just five years time. It wasn’t until 1925 that any of her arrests resulted in a serious penalty—she served two years jail time after slashing the face of a Sydney Corke with a razor blade.

The Devil and John Holmes

John Holmes was a porn star. Eddie Nash was a drug lord. Their association ended in one of the most brutal mass murders in the history of Los Angeles.

Holmes’s biggest commodity had been trouble. He was freebasing one hit of coke every ten or fifteen minutes, swallowing forty to fifty Valium a day to cut the edge. The drugs affected his work, he couldn’t work in porn. Now he was a drug delivery boy for the Wonderland Gang. His mistress, Jeana, who’d been with him since she was fifteen, was turning tricks to support his habit. They were living out of the trunk of his estranged wife’s Chevy Malibu. Holmes was stealing luggage off conveyers at L.A. International, buying appliances with his wife’s credit cards, fencing them for cash.

Since the late Sixties, Holmes had traded on his natural endowment. In a career that would span twenty years, Holmes made about 3000 pornographic films, had sex with 14,000 women. At the height of his popularity, he earned $3000 a day on films and almost as much turning tricks, servicing wealthy men and women on both coasts and in Europe.

He got hooked on drugs, primarily cocaine, which eventually rendered him incapable of performing. He was always late to the set, and when he finally did show up he’d disappear into the bathroom for hours at a time. After which point, of course, he was scatterbrained and unable to perform. Then he stopped getting roles.

During the height of his drug addiction, Holmes went broke and turned to crime to support his habit. He stole luggage from the baggage claim at LAX, sold things he purchased with his wife’s charge cards, broke into cars. Somewhere around this time, John got involved with alleged drug dealer Eddie Nash, who had an unsavory reputation.

What is in the NZ mystery safe?

Walter Hickey at Business Insider reports:

frghdA mysterious vault found in the basement of a New Zealand home has Reddit users salivating over what could possibly be inside.

On Friday Reddit user dont_stop_me_smee posted an album on the Pics subreddit, explaining that a friend of his moved into a former drug house and found a huge safe and that they wanted to get it opened.

Surrounding the massive vault are ten inches of solid reinforced concrete on all sides, and curiosity about the contents have reached a fever pitch on the massive news and entertainment site.

Immediately, several Reddit users with advanced knowledge of safes chimed in with tips and suggestions. Redditor Tof1911 quickly identified the vault as a Sargent and Greenleaf dial 6630 and recommended opening it with either a stethoscope or a bore-a-scope.

Soon, the original poster announced that he had set up a special subreddit to discuss the safe and provide updates, /r/WhatsInThisThing, which rocketed to over 60,000 subscribers in two days.
