Restaurant busted for not serving Zebra meat

A restaurant in the UK has been busted for serving horse instead of zebra…and there is an outcry over the deception…imagine the outcry if they’d actually served zebra instead of wonky donkey meat.

It lured in customers with the promise of exotic cuts of zebra, llama and wildebeest.

But diners at The Steakhouse were likely to find themselves unwittingly eating horse.   Read more »

I wanna try a whale burger

Michael Evans discusses being at the top of the food chain.

Sitting atop the food chain is a hand-wringing place to be.

Oh, the daily angst of deciding which fellow beast from the animal kingdom should be slaughtered to ensure my survival.

Excuse my existential dilemma as I wipe the pork fat from my lips and devour a chicken leg before tossing the bone to the pooch at my feet. Lucky hound – how did he get to be domesticated rather than filleted anyway? Best not take him on holiday to Asia.

Funny how we humans make the rules about what we can – and can’t – eat.

But 4 years ago it wasn’t just donkey and buffalo.  Read more »

With the European Horse meat scandal in full swing, the butchers that sell “the other red meat” are doing a roaring trade as Britons are curious:

“While people are putting horse into their shopping cart on the website they are also putting in things like zebra, llama and alpaca,” said Paul Webb, director of central England-based speciality meat supplier Exotic Meats.

Horsemeat, which has a sweet, gamey flavor, is cheaper and healthier than beef, containing half the fat, more Omega 3, and high in protein and iron.   Read more »

POLL: Beef or Horse, I love my meat

Of course, there are those severely misguided sorts that would like us to eat no meat at all.  Meet Traci Bingham, a “committed vegetarian”, who volunteered for a PETA campaign to put people off their meat.  I’m not entirely sure how this particular campaign would have achieved that, to be honest.

Horse meat is sold to and consumed by human beings in various parts of the world.  Where this isn’t the case, Gareth Morgan’s cat friends and dogs are the lucky recipients instead.   Read more »
