With overseas terror attacks and mass migration of un-vetted refugees into Europe, many people are concerned about the connection between Islam and terrorism, along with the social unrest that can accompany large-scale migration.  While New Zealand has been relatively insulated it would be incredibly naive to think we are immune to the challenges faced by Europe and the US.

Too often, the left labels those raising concerns as racists or bigots – a cynical attempt to shut down debate through name calling. Debating the ideas and beliefs of any religion shouldn’t be forbidden and the practical difficulties of integration, especially where there is a clash of values, should be openly discussed.

Question three: Should assimilation be required for citizenship, like Switzerland’s immigration policy?

My motivation for creating a survey on immigration was to get an accurate snapshot of what a  Conservative/ Libertarian voter  thinks about immigration in New Zealand. I wanted this snap shot  primarily for David Seymour  as he commented that the small changes Act had proposed for immigration did not gain any support from this blog and resulted in a lot of negativity from the media.

Winston Peters of course has always been vocal about immigration, I hope this survey gives him some insight on what our real concerns about immigration are. Are we anti-immigration? Or do we think immigration is a good thing?

John Key likes to implement policies that will be popular with voters so he too should find this survey useful.I think he will be surprised at what it shows.

Due to our large audience we easily surveyed over one thousand voters in less than a day. This survey is not of the general population but of a specific conservative/libertarian audience. I gave two yes options and two no options for every  question.

Following on from yesterday’s post, Dogs and Islam, a reader wrote in the following:

I’ve been following Whaleoil’s stories about Islam for the last few years, and to be honest, I really haven’t been paying much attention.

But the dog thing struck a note.

Thinking about it, how absurd.  Women and gays are treated poorly by Islam, and that’s just taken as read.  I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that the idea of losing my freedom to walk the dog is hurting me more than the idea some Muslim woman is subjugated inside a New Zealand home somewhere.

But the idea that I can’t walk my dog through the park because it is also used by my Muslim neighbours kind of crystallised the message that Whaleoil has been hammering for all this time.

There is no integration when children of immigrants perpetuate non-Western values

Teachers at a school in Germany staged a walkout protest at an end-of-term ceremony for A-level students after a Muslim pupil refused to shake the hand of his class mistress on ‘religious grounds.’

As the female teacher at the Kurt-Tucholsky School in Hamburg went to shake the hand of the student he offered his wrist instead.

Apparently, seconds later, he told her; ‘No offence, my religion won’t let me do that. I do not mean to disrespect you.’

But fellow teachers were outraged and demanded he be sent home from the event, a move headteacher Andrea Lüdtke refused.

Instead five teachers walked out amid ‘intense discussions’ between the student, fellow classmates and the remaining tutors. Read more »

New Zealand’s annual refugee intake of 750 was disgracefully low. An intake of 1000 is not much better. A doubling of the level, to 1500, as urged by Amnesty International and the Labour and Green parties, ought to be possible. The Minister of Immigration, Michael Woodhouse, points to the cost of ongoing support for those already admitted, many of whom are said to be still struggling to find work even after being here for up to 10 years. Doubtless a doubling of the number would mean much more than doubling the cost of refugee resettlement over the next 10 years. But the world is facing a wave of people fleeing from the upheaval in Muslim countries and all decent countries need to provide asylum for those in genuine danger.

I have no problem with the concept of refugees, or even the doubling of a quota, in spite of it being nothing more than a box to tick for Helen Clark’s run at the big chair at the UN. Read more »

PPTA blogger sees value in smaller class sizes for disruptive students

In an interesting article on the PPTA blog site, blogger Tom Haig admits that smaller classroom sizes are one solution for dealing with disruptive students. In the same article he mocks charter schools’ ability to remove a disruptive student from the classroom yet he acknowledges the pressure within mainstream schooling to integrate these disruptive students into the classroom. Despite saying that he supports this mainstream ideology of integration of disruptive students he also acknowledges that they impact negatively on the other students.

Eric Crampton, from the New Zealand Initiative, pointed out some research recently…

…the final sentence of Eric’s post got me thinking. He writes  “The benefits to disruptive students of being in mainstream classrooms would have to be substantial to make integrated classrooms desirable overall.”

This seems somewhat out of touch with how our schools work.  The reality is almost all schools in New Zealand see integration (of disruptive students) as desirable. Removing students, from class or from school, is heavily frowned on by the powers that be (unless you’re a charter school apparently), and the vast majority of schools agree.

It is amusing that Mr Hague mocks charter schools for removing disruptive students from the classroom, or from the school, when the alternative education provider that I used to work for gained almost all its students from local mainstream high schools who had removed them because of their disruptive behaviour.

An example of this is from a very traditional boys’ school I visited a few years ago which had just got rid of the ‘withdrawal room’ where students were sent to cool off when they were playing up in class. Now teachers were expected to deal with the problem; the message teachers were given was “be more interesting and the boys won’t cause trouble”.  This is consistent from the top down, when the Minister praises schools for getting the rates of suspensions and expulsions down, and the Ministry of Education’s PB4L action plan is about keeping students engaged and at school.

There are a lot of good things about this, and there are good reasons to believe that school practices can reduce the rates of disruption. But, like with student achievement gaps, school practices on their own almost certainly won’t be able to eliminate the problem.

But Eric also seems to assume that there’s a reasonable alternative for ‘disruptive’ students, which isn’t being in mainstream classrooms. Currently there are around 1800 students in Alternative Education (AE) centres, which are where some of the ‘most challenging’ students end up .

And AE is only for students aged 13-16 who are “genuinely alienated from the education system”, and specifically not for students who are “difficult to manage in a mainstream setting”.

If by ‘genuinely alienated’ Haig means chronic truants then, yes, many of my students were. It also means that they were suspended, expelled and excluded from mainstream education for smoking, violence and drug use. It meant that they had run out of options because no mainstream school would take them. Haig says that AE is not for students who are difficult to manage in a mainstream setting yet, in my experience, it did include them as well. One student I taught in AE had ADHD and various schools had tried to manage him unsuccessfully despite him being put on Ritalin and other drugs. Another student had dyslexia. Yet another student had suffered brain damage and his ability to learn was impaired.

So of the around 230,000 students aged 13-16, there are places for 1800 highly alienated ones in AE centres. What else is there? Very little.

Mr Haig is quite right that there is very little around for these students, which is why charter schools like Vanguard Military School are so fantastic. Military discipline works well for many disruptive students who desperately need boundaries and guidelines, a sense of belonging and family.

…So what else can be done?

Accepting that we shouldn’t, and can’t exclude disruptive students from mainstream education, but that they do, as the research indicates, have a serious impact, particularly when there are multiple disruptive students in a class, maybe the solution is about reducing the numbers of disruptive students in each class?

One way to do this is to dedicate staffing to low decile schools where disruptive students are more prevalent. If classes in those schools went from 25-30 students with 3 or 4 disruptive students to 15-20 with 1-2 that would significantly improve their peers’ learning.

The left wing is strongly pro-immigration and sees it as a humanitarian gesture, rather than a calculated one, to bring in new skills and hard-working people who will contribute and assimilate well to our society. It is also more concerned with the rights of criminals than of law-abiding citizens.  These examples are two ways in which left-wing politics make it easy for Islamic terrorism to come to our shores. Daniel Greenfield is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam.  He explains that the left wing’s culpability for Islamic terrorism is much more complex than just my two examples.

Men and women, some whose clothes were still marked with gray ash, walked dazedly toward Union Square. Many did not know what to do or where to go. So they kept on walking. They knew the country was under attack, but they did not know how bad it was or what might still be heading for them.

…In the coming days, the statue of Washington would be repeatedly vandalized by leftists drawing peace signs and “No War” and “War is Not the Answer” slogans on it. But that moment crystallized my realization that while Muslim terrorists had carried out the attack, it was the left we would have to fight.

While some New Yorkers had gone to help the victims of Islamic terrorists, the left had rushed to aid the terrorists. Unlike the rest of us, they were not shocked or horrified by the attack. They were treasonously working on ways to spin the murder of thousands of Americans to protect the enemy.

The greatest obstacle to defeating Islamic terrorism is still the left.

Salafists  represent the most fundamentalist group in the Islamic world. According to Wikipedia the derogatory name for them is Wahhabism.  This group believes that Jihad against the West is acceptable and is a legitimate expression of Islam. Ironically Salafism is sponsored globally by Saudi Arabia, which is currently the head of the human rights committee of the UN.

Considering that this group reject religious innovation (reform) and support  the   implementation of sharia law, it is no surprise that they feel they have the answer to Germany’s current integration problems. MuslimStern is a salafist pressure group that has 20,000 followers on Facebook. Currently their Jihad is cultural Jihad. Their activists promote the victim status of Muslims in order to change German society. Their mission statement states that their job is to “highlight the way the media uses incidents to promote racism against minorities”.

Brits debate closing borders to immigrants that are a “burden”

Immigration is a hot topic all over the world.  The have-nots are coming to get the good life without having earned it.  Frequently they also then bring with them the problems that they supposedly tried to get away from.

In last week’s European elections, voters across Europe sent a signal to the bloated, hideously expensive and out-of-touch Brussels bureaucracy.

From Denmark to Greece and from Finland to France, the people of Europe made it clear that they increasingly reject the idea of open borders and mass migration.

Some see it as an economic threat, others as a challenge to their perception of national identity.

Whatever their reasons, political leaders in Europe must take note. I have lost count of the number of people who told me: ‘I wouldn’t dream of voting Ukip in a General Election  but I wanted to send a message.’ Usually, this was about immigration.

It’s the “I’m not racist but…” problem.

Haven’t we already lost as a country when closing your borders to immigrants that aren’t really good picks is not possible for fear of being seen as racist?

Sure, let them all in.  Let’s have the problems that this causes, and at least we won’t be called names.  Or worse: get tut tutted by the United Nations. Read more »
