Courage and Compassion

The Bielski Brothers

The story of three men who defied the Nazis saved hundreds of Jews and built a village in the forest

In 1941, as the Jews of Eastern Europe were being massacred by the thousands, the Bielski brothers took refuge in a dense Polish forest filled with wolves, poisonous snakes, swamps and frigid temperatures during the winter. It was there they staged their revenge for the deaths of their parents, family members and friends.

Throughout the War, the Bielski brothers carried out a continuous guerrilla war against the Nazis. They often used captured German weapons gained from ambushed German patrols. They also derailed troop trains and blew up bridges and electricity stations.

Tuvia, Asael, Zus, and Aron Bielski were four of 12 children born to a miller and his wife in the rural village of Stankevich, near Novogrudok. The only Jews in a small community, they had connections within and outside of the Jewish community and quickly learned how to look after themselves. Before long, the older brothers developed a fearsome reputation.

After witnessing the brutal execution of their parents by Nazi soldiers, the three Bielski brothers, Tuvia, Asael and Zus, fled into the nearby dense forest, where they joined relatives and friends, scrounged for food and weapons and inflicted whatever damage they could on German troops.

It was a grim scene that would, of course, be repeated endlessly throughout the war. Instead of running or capitulating or giving in to despair, these brothers — Tuvia, Zus, and Asael Bielski — did something else entirely. They fought back, waging a guerrilla war of wits and cunning against both the Nazis and the pro-Nazi sympathisers. Along the way, they saved well over a thousand Jewish lives.

Hate crimes up in Toronto, you’ll never guess who are the biggest victims

Hate crimes are up in Toronto. We are often told, by people like Susan Devoy, that increasingly it is Muslims who are the victims of hate crimes.

We have even seen the Media party pile into several recent incidents and claiming that Muslims are the victims of increasing hate crime.

But, as figures show from Toronto, it is one religious group that is routinely abused…and it isn’t Muslims.

Reported hate crimes are on the rise according to a detailed report released by Toronto police.

The report shows hate crimes increased by eight per cent last year, from 134 incidents to 145 in 2016.   Read more »

France has passed the point of no return

France has passed the point of no return.

If I was Jewish and in France I would be booking my flight out.

Times of Israel reports:

Two Jewish brothers said they were abducted briefly and beaten by several men in suburban Paris in an incident that ended with one brother having his finger sawed off by an assailant.

The brothers were hospitalized in what was described as a state of shock following the incident Tuesday night in Bondy. A case report published Thursday by the National Bureau for Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism, or BNVCA, based on a police complaint by the alleged victims did not specify their medical condition.   Read more »

Is the Maori Party a friend of Israel?

As I did with all the other political parties I approached the Maori Party for comment on the New Zealand sponsored UN resolution 2334 against Israel. After I received a response from their media spokesperson I e-mailed her the following questions:

1. Does the Maori Party consider itself to be a friend of Israel?
2. Does the Maori Party support Murray McCully’s decision to sponsor resolution 2334 against democratic Israel along with communist Venezuela and Islamic Senegal?
3. Does the Maori Party support the rights of the Jews to Israel as indigenous people of that region?
4.As a support partner of the current government were you briefed in any way about this resolution?
If you weren’t briefed why do you think that you were not informed?
5.The Maori Party believes in Tino Rangatiratanga. If any of your answers to our previous questions suppose it is all about Tino Rangatiratanga for Palestinians why do you not consider Tino Rangatiratanga for Jews who have resided in the exact same region for more than three thousand years and certainly before any such people as Palestinians and eighteen hundred years before Islam was even invented?

A “Judenrein” Jerusalem? New Zealand’s Shame

A respected British commentator recently described New Zealand as “a stupid country of no other significance”. She was referencing NZ co-sponsoring UN resolution 2334, which effectively bans Jews from living in certain areas.

I am not convinced that New Zealand is a stupid country but in this matter some of our leaders are surely morally deficient.

First, some background:

Jews have been subject to expulsion and persecution for millennia. In the 1930’s and 40’s, for example, the Germans implemented a policy of Jewish expulsion. Their goal was to make Europe Judenrein* or Judenfrei – free of Jews. Jewish communities, many of which had been resident in their host countries for hundreds of years, were expelled or eliminated. I have a number of Jewish friends who lived through this dark period.

Forbidding Jews to live in a particular area was, of course, antisemitism. And it is a matter of historical record that the Judenrein policy was a step on the road to genocide. Ultimately six million Jews were murdered.

A tale of two professors on Islamic misogyny and anti-Semitism

Radio New Zealand had two professors on air this morning, nearly an hour apart giving two separate views on the Islamic hate-speech preacher Shaykh Dr Mohammad Anwar Sahib.

Jim Veitch from Victoria University says it’s OK as it was in the mosque and shouldn’t be considered from a secular viewpoint.

First the NZ Herald hires a bullying journalist who wants to break Farrar’s leg, now they allow anti-Semitism on their Facebook page

We all know that the NZ Herald has hired a columnist who threatened to break David Farrar’s legs for daring to have an opposing view to hers.

David Farrar also posted yesterday about an anti-Semitic comment left on the NZ Herald’s website.

You’d have thought they would remove it, but I just checked and it is still there.

The evilness of Facebook

Facebook anti-Semitism Jake Wallis Simons Dan Sanderson and Amy Marley

You would think an organisation founded and run by someone called Zuckerberg would be more vigilant, but no, Facebook stands accused of vile anti-Semitism.

Facebook is at the centre of an anti-Semitism row after it emerged that its automatic translation software was spewing out vile, anti-Jewish diatribes.

One post written in German, which criticised neo-Nazis, was wrongly translated to produce a rant about ‘dull hollow, dirty Jews’ who were ‘a disgrace to our country’.

Another post in Hebrew, written by Israel’s Education Minister Naftali Bennett, was twisted by the software to suggest a Holocaust victim was killed by ‘the master race’.

When MailOnline brought the error to Facebook’s attention it apologised and claimed to have solved the problem, but declined to say what had gone wrong.
