Face of the day

Today’s Face of the day is a man of courage, a man who stood for freedom of expression, a man who persisted in the face of danger. His body guard was not able to save him or the others at his newspaper. I honour him, and them today and I challenge us all to not let their deaths be in vain. We too must be brave. We too must stand strong against this worldwide threat against the freedoms that we hold so dear.

Friday Firepower – jumpstarting a car with an AK-47

via The Firearm Blog

Who knew AKs could do amazing stuff like this.

The AK47 and all its variants are among the most iconic rifles in history and have been the workhorse for many countries around the world for decades. They’re cheap, simple, reliable and can jump start your car in a fix. No really, check out the video below. Don’t try this at home though, I’d suggest keeping a set of jumper cables in the trunk and joining [AA].

Shearer on negotiation

NZ Herald

David Shearer has given a speech on the art of negotiation:

Mr Shearer spoke to the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand about his skills in negotiating difficult situations in some of the world’s most dangerous spots.

He acknowledged those gathered, unlike some politicians, were probably not in the business of disagreeing; but were probably – like him – more skilled at negotiation.

He said he shared some experience in their field of expertise from his work with the United Nations and dealing with people carrying weapons – saying he worked in Somalia, Liberia, Rwanda, Lebanon, Israel, Afghanistan and Iraq to help people reclaim their lives.

“Whenever I stepped into the middle of an argument, I learned some more about human nature.”

Which all sounds like bullshit considering his idea in politics is when parties or people disagree they must walk away from deals…strange behaviour really from a person who likes to think he was the master negotiator in world hot spots…no wonder he got on sweet with Somali warlords…when they pointed their AK-47s at him he bailed out just like he wants the Maori party to do.

Why shooting guns is fun

Sydney Morning Herald

A journalist finds out exactly why shooting guns is so much fun:

“OK,” Brandon yelled, “have you ever fired a machine gun before?”

“No.”

“That’s all right. This is an AK-47, I’m gonna take you through it.”

So he handed me this huge weapon, and that’s when it got weird. I don’t really like guns, I don’t think anyone should be allowed to own guns, I don’t see the fascination in guns, and BOOM! I’d just fired a shot! There was a small hole a few centimetres from the centre of the target, and BOOM! I’d fired another! This was incredible!

Brandon grinned and switched the gun to automatic, braced me with a hand on my shoulder, and yelled at me to fire. Rat-a-tat-tat! Now there were about a million little holes in the paper target, spread around haphazardly, and the gun was still bucking and shuddering in my hands.

Suddenly I was Rambo, I was John Wayne, I was the Terminator. I was blasting away like nobody’s business, and wow, I was having fun.

The M4 was next, with similar results – a wildly random pattern of bullet holes and a freshly crowned Aussie gun nut. The Uzi was ridiculous, this snub-nosed thing that fires out ammo with incredible speed. The bullets were still going all over the place, but who cares? I was owning this thing, until… click, click. I was out of ammo.

Brandon patted me on the back. “Do you want a photo with your firearm?” he asked.

Ha, I’m thinking, you mean one of those cringeworthy shots you always see of insecure blokes clutching onto their makeshift manhood?

“Absolutely!”

So I got the photo. And then I left. I’m still no gun nut. But I’d seen another side of the US that day, and it was kind of fun. I can see why those swimmers were into it.

Friday Firepower – AK47

The ubiquitous Ak47 is the most famous combat arm in the world. The Brigade has a gallery of the AK in many different hands – Who Hasn’t Fired an AK?

Here are a couple of photos that two of my favourites that capture the essence of the AK. 😉
