Dirty Media – NZME. and NZ Inc. “Rent a Quoting”?

I know that New Zealand is a village but when it comes to reporting, repetition seems to be the mother of un-invention.

Fran O’Sullivan, who is now the NZME. Business Editorial Director of all things has put out yet another puff piece on the dairy industry.

In it she does her usual reach around using large quotes from her favourite pet of the moment, this time on a Sean Keane.

“For a tempered – and “outside in” view – it is hard to go past Sean Keane of Triple T Consulting”.

Who is Sean Keane you may ask and it is a good question as he doesn’t have a huge online profile since returning to NZ in 2008. And outside in? How about inside inside at the Herald?

Could it be the same as this Sean Keane? Of Triple T based in Hong Kong? Online it seems he’s in New Zealand?

“One of the most insightful analysts is Sean Keane of Triple T Consulting based in Hong Kong”.

Congratulations! We’re trillionaires

Figures from the Reserve Bank show the net household wealth of all New Zealanders is $1,019,146,000,000.

The net wealth was up from $913 billion at the end of 2012, a gain of more than $100b in less than two years.

Housing and land values make up more than half of the wealth, at $563b, with net financial wealth of about $455b.

The new set of household balance sheet figures cover a wider range of assets than in the past. They now include currency, the equity in unlisted small- and medium-sized business and some superannuation holdings. Read more »

The flag? Really?

John Key is man possessed.  He seems to want a flag change for his trophy wall

Prime Minister John Key is pushing on with a referendum on changing the flag, and will write to political parties asking them to join a cross-party committee in the coming days.

Mr Key named the referendum as one of his third-term priorities following National’s election win and brought it up at his address to the RSA national conference today.

He wants the committee to meet sometime this year to discuss how a referendum would take place and consider the legislation which would support the binding vote.

It is likely it will be a two-step referendum, with the first step as a run-off between alternative designs by the end of 2015, and the most popular of these up against the current flag around April 2016.

Deputy Prime Minister Bill English will also likely lead the process.

“We’ve had this debate roaming around for the better part of the last 25 years and we need to put it to bed one way or the other and make a call on it,” Mr Key says.

Mr Key believes the argument for a new flag is strong, but people are likely to be against switching flags because people don’t like change.

Actually, I think we’re wondering if we’ve run out of important things to do.   It seems such a change for change’s sake kind of thing for a Government to do.  If it was part of a move to a republic for example, then I can understand it.  But just to change the flag because… just to change it?

“I believe there is no conflict” – Nelson Mayor

A Nelson reader wants some Whale sunlight on their Troughing Mayor:

Chinese e-commerce opportunities that Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio has been touting as being great for Nelson businesses also look set to make money for the mayor himself.

This year ratepayers paid more than $10,000 to send Mr Miccio on trips to China in March and September to help develop connections for Nelson businesses.

Sounds interesting so far. What has he done wrong?

Mr Miccio says there is no conflict of interest between his mayoral work in developing Nelson-Chinese business and his chairmanship in a new venture, NZ Inc Shop.

It intends to sell New Zealand products through Tmall.com, a subsidiary of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.

[The trip] included a delegation of local [Nelson] businessmen and saw Mr Miccio and Mr Findlater visiting e-commerce capital Hangzhou, where they met Alibaba’s president.

Companies Office records show 15 per cent of NZ Inc Shop is held by Mr Miccio, his parents Cristina and Raffaele Miccio, and his wife, Kimberley, through Nelson-based company Bissi Ltd, of which Mr Miccio is sole director.

Mr Miccio said there had been no council crossover and he had never spent any council time on NZ Inc Shop. Instead, it was his past personal business experience in China that had led to his involvement. He said nothing he had done on the council trips “added value” to his role in NZ Inc Shop now.

Readers will remember that alleged private business conducted on the same trip as tax payer funded travel claimed the scalp of National MP Pansy Wong.

Miccio is a blatant trougher of the highest order. His arguments hold no water. Either his trip had nothing to do with his private business, or the trip is for benefit of the Nelson ratepayers. He can’t have it both ways.

Please notice the weasel words: “spent no council time on NZ Inc shop”. Left unsaid is that he did spend ratepayers money.

Word on the street is that Miccio is a one term mayor, so he seems to be making hay while the sun shines. The Whale will keep shining light on this trougher as he squeals his innocence.
