Turbine

Bird mincing wind turbines are now killing umpteen bats

I hate wind farms, they are unsightly, make a huge noise, kill migrating birds and use huge quantities of rare earth metals making them not green at all…on top of that they are dreadfully inefficient and only work with huge government subsidies.

To cap all that off, they are also now killing bats.

Endangered bats are being killed by wind turbine blades because the air currents are similar to those near tall trees, a study shows.

It?s feared the legally protected mammals are dying while hunting insects that are attracted by the heat generated by the spinning blades.

Thousands of bats have been killed by wind turbines causing a population decline that could cost the farming industry billions each year.

The nocturnal creatures are welcomed by farmers across the world as they eat large numbers of insects that usually damage crops. ? Read more »

How about that Green Energy huh?

This is the sort of nonsense you get when the green taliban pushes their pet projects onto ratepayers.

A wind turbine which cost the taxpayer ?48,000 and generated an average of just ?5 worth of electricity per month, is being removed.

It was put up at the Welsh government’s Aberystwyth office when it opened in 2009 as part of a range of environmentally-friendly features.

But ministers came under fire last year over its output and now it has gone.

They say the turbine’s manufacturer went into liquidation and they were not likely to find someone to maintain it.

Last year, the Welsh government confirmed in a response to a Freedom of Information request that between January 2012 and July 2013 the turbine generated 585 kilowatt hours of energy (kWh) – an average of 33 kWh per month.

Taking 16p as an estimate for the price of electricity per kWh in the consumer market, that worked out at a value of ?5.28 per month.

At that rate it would have taken hundreds of years for the turbine to offset its cost. ? Read more »

Evil bat killing wind turbines

It is time to put an end to the bird and now bat killing wind turbines.

WIND farms may be killing legally protected bats by causing internal organs to ?explode?, according to wildlife experts.

The Bat Conservation Trust says it has evidence that pressure caused by turbine blades causes the animals? lungs to “pop”, causing immediate death.

Bats are a protected species in the UK, and deliberately injuring or killing them carries the threat of six months in jail and a fine of up to ?5,000.

Conservationists believe bats are dying while hunting insects that are attracted by the heat generated by turbine blades.

They have suggested that even if the bats avoid the turbines, the change in pressure created by the spinning blades is capable of bursting their lungs.

Anne Youngman, Scottish officer of the Bat Conservation Trust, said: “People think that the danger is the bats getting hit by the blade, which does happen.

“But the danger to them is really barotrauma, were they are literally popped from the inside.? Read more »

A good wind turbine

Yeah, how about those cool “green” wind turbines?

A ?2 million, 100 metre tall wind turbine catches fire in hurricane-force winds at Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, Scotland. The wind turbine was spinning so fast it caught fire. The engine of the giant turbine went up in flames and its blades were blackened by smoke. The turbine was one of 15 set up on hills overlooking the Scottish coast, built to supply green electricity to 20,000 homes.
